This is my second book that I've read by this author and I have to say he doesn't let me down. His books have been consistently good and thoroughly entertaining. When I am reading I feel as though I am there, that is how well he describes and captivates the reader with his stories. If you are looking for a book to read that is just enjoyable, this is one of for you. It is a story that would be good to read any time of year, not just at Christmas time.
( thanks to the power of the social media ) and I must say I am very pleased that I was accepted to review his latest addition to the book world because I immediately fall under the spell of his magical storytelling abilities.
Let me tell you why I love What Happens at Christmas...
When high-lying Holly learns about the death of her estranged father, she decides to take a trip down memory lane and finds out more about the father who disappeared out of her life when she was only seven years old.
Arriving in the sleepy but charming little Dartmoor village, Holly is shocked to discover that she's inherited not only his gorgeous cottage but also her father's adorable dog too.
Holly Brice, the leading lady of this story, is a strong and intelligent person with a penchant for driving classic cars! But the career-driven girl is also heartbroken by events that happened many years ago and irrevocably change the way she's lived her life up till now.
Holly decides to take the opportunity to found out more about her father, and she is amazed to see that her father was a very much loved and well-respected member of the community.
With a few little surprises, Holly can finally to imagine a picture of her father's life after he moved away from his young family. I loved watching Holly taking care of her little canine friend Sterling, the only link to her father, and slowly growing very fond of him. Sterling was a fabulous addition to the story, and he certainly made himself a very useful companion, providing support for Holly in such a tough time.
Other three principal protagonists in this story captured Holly's heart, every one of them in a different way. Because of Jack, Justin, and the eccentric Howard Redgrave, Holly can move on and probably even forgive both parents. Holly has been carrying some pretty emotional baggage from the time of her father's departure, and she firmly believes that she was also deprived of a person she loved from the bottom of her heart. Therefore Holly's established some rules in life, and one of them was -NO long term commitment, No deep feelings. But as the time gets closer to Chrismas Holly is starting to warm up to the possibility of finding a new life in the country and with the three man and one dog eager to help her in every possible way Holly might even change her mind about a few things.
I adored this book. The feel-good aspect of it mixed with lots of emotion and some heartbreak. I loved the way all the villagers welcomed Holly with open arms and with their support, love and encouragement Holly is learning the truth behind her father's selfish actions.
Once I started reading, I got swept away on a current of the captivating storyline, the description of the village and its surroundings and warmness of all the protagonists.
I highly recommend this gorgeous Christmassy read!
Having a golden lab myself, strangely enough with the same name as the main character in this book, I totally saw Stirling in my mind doing exactly what my own dog does. She has the same sad eye look that Stirling has, and also has the ability to know when a cuddle is needed.
Holly is a brilliant character. Coming to her long lost dads home she doesn't know what she will find. She didn't know her dad and feels that she can't possibly gain anything from being around his memories. Boy is she wrong.
Hollys dad was very well known in the village of Brookford, a fact which Holly very quickly discovers. But this is something good, as she manages to gain a far better insight into her dad as a person from those who knew him.
I loved the fact that Holly, on clearing out her dads house, manages to find a bundle hidden away which lets her almost see inside her dads mind over the years. I'm deliberately not saying anything else as I don't want to spoil things. Suffice to say her discovery is a catalyst for Holly to once and for all make up her own mind about her dad.
Holly ends up with, apart from Stirling of course, another 3 men in her life. Each one of these men have endearing features, but only one of them is right for her. It is a little easier than her having to choose between the 3 of them, but she is still in two minds about a lot of things until quite a way through the story.
A brilliant read from the author, one which has gone straight onto my favourite reads list, and I highly recommend it to fans of chick lit and those who want an easy to read story with a bit more substance.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Carina for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
