Nathaniel Stanton, or Lord Foxstead, returns home from war with a new ward in tow, a young widow named Jocelin March whose husband purportedly died in battle. She has a young boy named Jimmy, and Lord Foxstead is determined to do his duty as their guardian by introducing Jocelin to polite society in the hopes of finding her a husband who can look after both her and Jimmy. Nathaniel decides to approach Eliza Pierce, the widow of his best friend, Samuel, who died in the very same battle, to help him in this quest. Eliza Pierce runs an organization called Elegant Occasions, along with her sisters, Diana and Verity, which seeks to aid helpless or fallen young women and to prepare young ladies, such as Jocelin, to enter society by instructing them on all the social niceties and the acceptable forms of behavior and address when in the midst of such esteemed company as the Ton. As Eliza and Nathaniel begin to spend more time together in their quest to help Jocelin, they both feel an inexorable pull towards one another that surprises them both. Nathaniel is keeping a huge secret, however, that may threaten to upend everything he holds dear. Will Nathaniel and Eliza find true happiness together or will Nathaniel’s secrets and Eliza’s reservations about marrying again destroy their budding relationship before it even has the chance to fully bloom?
I truly enjoyed reading this novel! There were several shocking reveals throughout the course of the book that kept me fully engaged and entertained until the very end. Sabrina Jeffries did a fabulous job at setting the tone and pacing of the novel at such a canter at some points and at such a gallop in others so as not to allow readers the opportunity to slow to a trot or fall off in search of another read. I would recommend that other readers read the first book in this series before reading this one, just to get a sense of the world and the characters the author has created without getting confused. I did not read the first book in the series before reading this one, and I must admit that I did feel confused at times about certain aspects of the plot and the characters’ relations to one another because I believe the author expected readers of this novel to already be aware of these details from the first novel in the series. With that being said, I still felt like I had enough information to go on to still enjoy this book in its entirety without feeling like I had to stop and refer to the first book in this series, so in all honesty, readers can and should feel confident enough to read these books in whatever order they wish. I just felt, for me personally, that reading the books in order would have been easier and better, overall. Nathaniel and Eliza had palpable chemistry as the main protagonists and their banter and interactions with each other kept me thoroughly captivated. Sabrina Jeffries writes such beautiful characters and scenes with historical accuracy and meticulous attention to detail that I felt physically transported to the time period the novel takes place in. This is a masterful work of fiction! I highly recommend it to adult romance readers everywhere!
