Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Silly snowflake / winter theme graphic background. Model is bundled in layers, but does not convince us it is cold enough to do so. Synopsis sounds like a bit of fun with the holiday romance and friends-to-lovers theme.
Looking Deeper:
British setting, heavy on terminology. So, if you don't know why one would not give a quid what the git thought about you snogging while taking the tube, you'll need to brush up on your your UK English. *wink* Third person POV narrative.
When Justin dumps his cheat of a boyfriend weeks before the Christmas party, he has no desire to attend. His best friend, Sean, returns from nearly a year of traveling the world, just in time to convince Justin that they could pretend to be boyfriends to make the ex jealous and think Justin's moved on. No difficult task as both men have had a crush on the other since they were teens. When bad weather changes their holiday plans, the lines between pretend and reality begin to blur, leaving the men to decide if it's worth risking a lifelong friendship to discover if there's a chance at something more.
Justin's a fun character, out and proud since his youth and growing up in a supportive home environment. Sean suppressed who he was, denying it to himself and everyone else out of fear for what his father would think, say and do. Over the years, these men missed many opportunities due to lack of communication, breeding guilt and regret. Their present time compatibility is as easy and natural as it was when they were kids and the chemistry that's been caged for years is finally unleashed. There are not a lot of scenes with prominent secondary characters, but what there was was enjoyable and fun.

Jay Northcote really has a knack for writing stories with sweet young men you can’t help but love and want to see find their way to each other. Long-time friends to lovers, each having kept their crush on the other quiet for reasons that changed over the years, finally taking the chance. Yes, it’s been done before, but Jay Northcote has done it really well here with Justin and Sean, and the Christmas setting just adds to the cute and sweet factor.

The two MC’s grew up together and while Justin was out since they were young, Sean only came out fairly recently due to fear of his father’s reaction. Justin always believed he was crushing on his straight best friend, but Sean was crushing on him as well. After coming out Sean couldn’t find the right time to try to express his feelings; either Justin was dating someone or Sean was ready to leave on a nine month trip. Now he’s back, Justin is rid of his awful ex (who is also Justin’s co-worker) and Sean is going to pose as his fake boyfriend at the company Christmas party. That all goes better than expected, especially once they get home and get busy. The morning after both fear it will be awkward and can’t bear to have it affect their friendship. They also both want more, but are quiet as they secretly assess the other’s reaction. Take all these feelings, add in some snow, some snuggling, a couple of gibbons and some holiday magic and you’ve got a sexy, romantic and very sweet story.

It was so much fun to read the build up to them finally declaring their feelings. The men know each other well and are totally comfortable with each other as friends, it really shows during their “pretend boyfriend” times and serves to amp up the chemistry in each small touch and look.

I received one copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

What Happens at Christmas by Jay Northcote is like Christmas candy canes and romantic movies and warm, crackling fires all wrapped up in book format. Sweet, sexy, tender, and it just wraps you up in feel good emotions.

Justin has recently been dumped by a jerk of a guy that works in his office. The company holiday party is coming up and Justin doesn’t want to go because ‘the jerk’ will be there with HIS new guy.

Justin best friend Sean is coming back to town after a 9 month trip and has decided to be Justin’s ‘pretend boyfriend’ for the holiday party. Sexy party clothes, a little too much champagne, and some kissing on the dance floor lead them back to Justin’s place and a frantic ‘friends to lover’ moment that is real and hot and sexy and just all together perfect.

The days that follow their sexy little interlude are the perfect balance between ‘slightly awkward’ and ‘this is so much better than being just friends’. These two guys have been best friends since they were young…they KNOW each other. There are inside jokes and honest moments and honestly it was just sweet. There are definitely some ‘awkward communication’ moments between these two after they hook up and I found that totally believable. I wasn’t sure I was totally happy with how Sean’s dad reacted to their new relationship. Sean talks about how horrible his dad took the news that he was gay less than a year before and they hadn’t really talked about it since. When he admitted to his dad that he and Justin were in a relationship it seemed like he came around a bit too easily.
