I used Fr. Driscoll's book as a basis for a formation program for my parish. His clear writing enabled clear presentations and helped me "stay on track". Just the whole idea of "what happens" vs. "what is" is, in itself, worthy of a true catechetical presentation. The reaction of parishioners has been very positive. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to love the Mass even a little bit more. It should be required reading for RCIA programs.

I have re-rated it, since it's an outdated edition.
Get the revised one from 2011. Sold all over on the internet for $12.95. Including from the current publisher. Type in "What Happens at Mass revised". This is an excellent book. It is better then most other books out there on the mass. I run a parish library so I get lots of feedback. This book is by far the most popular. The problem is this is NOT the REVISED version being sold by LTP Liturgy Training Publications for $12.95 on the internet. So fellow catholics, if you want the book "What Happens at Mass" revised edition by Jeremy Driscoll, with the NEW 2011 LITURGY (MASS) CHANGES don't purchase this copy. This is the ATMASS copy, not the ATMASS2 copy.
If you want this older edition as a collector book, go ahead and buy it. Although I can't imagine it will be worth much, since so many practicing Catholics own a copy and there are so many books out there. Please don't pay over $15 for it though, that's just wasteful. Can also order from publisher directly for less.
Now back to the review: it has 5 chapters: Laying the Groundwork, Introductory Rites, The Liturgy of the Word, The Preparation of the Altar and Gifts, The Eucharist Prayer, Communion and The Dismissal Rite. I can say more about Jeremy's book but many of the other reviews already state it.

This book is so excellent and potentially life-changing that I bought a case of them! I give them to parishioners/friends/family, etc. who struggle with understanding the Mass or who complain that it "is boring!" You will never be bored again once you realize and understand what truly happens at each and every Mass! Thank you Father Driscoll for such a wonderful book that I have used to catechize so many people. It serves as the basis also for my annual presentation on the Mass for RCIA. You would be amazed at the number of "cradle Catholics" on the RCIA team each year who come up to me afterwards and say "I never knew that!"

This book was highly recommended by a professor. It has been a great find. Not only is the book very accessible and great for teaching anyone from children to RCIA candidates about the Mass, but it is also rich enough to give anyone a deeper understanding of the Mass. It is always within reach and used constantly as a reference. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to you.

Make sure you are getting the REVISED EDITION. Do NOT PURCHASE the 2008 version. Get the revised edition from 2011 with new mass changes. It's sold by LTP Liturgy Training Publications for $12.95 on the internet. So fellow catholics, if you want the book "What Happens at Mass Revised Edition" by Jeremy Driscoll, get ATMASS2, not ATMASS version.

Note: Author is not "unknown", it's Jeremy Driscoll. And binding is standard "paperback".

Excellent book, recommended by our parish priest. They are thinking of making it required reading for all RCIA students at our parish! I think every Catholic needs to read this book! It is surprising how little long time, and even "cradle Catholics", know about the Mass and the Eucharist and what everything during the Mass means. Not a movement, or a word, or a motion is wasted. Everything means something and serves a purpose. For Catholics who communion has just become something that they do with no thought behind it, they need to read this book.

Very highly recommended to anyone wanting to understand what is REALLY going on in the Church's highest Liturgy. Not 'just some ritual', Mass is "the very event of our salvation."

The 2005 edition is NOT the newest: My 2011 "Revised Edition" copies ("ATMASS2" on back = ISBN 978-1-61671-044-6 ) do use wordings from the Missal's new English translation update. The changes are not drastic, both editions are EXCELLENT.

I've even bought extras for RCIA gifts; and another group of us are reading it through out loud - with many pauses for discussion : )
(Not extremely light reading, yet clearly written explanations perfect for adults.)

Author spelling: (Father) "Jeremy Driscoll, OSB"

Fr. John Riccardo, Detroit radio priest, highly recommends this volume. He uses the word "concrete" a lot, which is distracting to me. He teaches at the Vatican and was one of Riccardo's instructors. It's a book you should have on your shelf and read.
