Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is one of those books that begs to be written, regardless of embarrassing implications and a lot of lamenting. For me it is an attempt at cleansing, just getting as much out as possible. Perhaps it is not so noble but, for me, it needed to be written. Another fictional memoir of mine, "The Cracked Mirror - Reflections Of An Appalachian Son" was pretty much all true and has some similar themes as "What Happens Next? A Life's True Tale." Someone could accurately say: 'Why write more about your life?' For me there was more to be said. The loves in my life were so special and there was the need to somehow sanctify them. Is it simply an ego thing? Maybe it is, but that is not on my conscious level. My dear wife was encouraging in my writing of this book and knows I love her. It is more an extension of "The Cracked Mirror," and I will leave it at that.

I wanted to explore my faith, how it had changed from those long ago bible belt days in Appalachia when church was not a pleasant Sunday morning outing, when the preacher made me feel unclean and bound for hell, when I was actually a nice timid kid who was all confused in my little boy world. Hence, the title, "What Happens Next? A Life's True Tale." I wanted to make sense of faith for me and present my simplistic arguments built around some 'markers' that we can all see and understand, around generational preoccupation with life and death. I wanted to explore more thoroughly my 'family disconnect' after joining the navy, to allow all those emotions to flow from within me onto the laptop pages.

Was there 'Cleansing?' There are no great alterations in my life, but I do feel better having written the book.

From the Back Cover

One of the author's previous books, "The Cracked Mirror - Reflections of an Appalachian Son" is labeled a 'fictional memoir' but it is at least ninety percent true. "What Happens Next? A Life's True Tale" is actually a brother to the 'fictional memoir.'

This book has some of the same information as its brother but it goes deeper than the flicker of neon lights, the author's relationships with lovely ladies, the gin mills, his acting in film, stage, and television. It goes beneath the shiny piano bars, booze, good times, and explores in depth a man's family disconnect, a murder and a suicide, his motel laments, the loneliness and despair, the implanted heritage of his childhood.

The brother 'fictional memoir' deals in some of these areas, but this volume has the added dimension of 'what happens next.' a man's simple look at his faith, its meaning for him, and where it can lead.
