Jerry Douglas has been at the forefront of Bluegrass and related styles of music for many years. With "What If," he and his current touring band lead the listener to a great convergence of Bluegrass and Jazz. The talent level on "What If" could not get any better. As if the title track weren't enough to justify the purchase, there's a wonderful cover of "Hey Joe." This one will be a favorite for a long time.

I have enjoyed Jerry Douglas's work for years. This release is not for fans of his other music. I appreciate that he is an established artist and that he might, from time to time, want to try something different. Usually that's a good thing. But this was not. The problem is not that it's not a bluegrass album; I like lots of music that's not bluegrass. The problem is that with the possible exception of "Hey Joe," none of the tracks on this album quite click. I think the goal was to do something interesting and innovative and different. It's definitely different -- but tedious and uninteresting. (At least to me).

Now I am no stranger to Jerry Douglas & his music but here seems to be yet another different genre, encompassing various influences & styles, and it's all fascinating stuff too. But isnt that what Jerry does anyway, stretching ones perceptions of possibilities for slide players & mere mortals, and dosn't he do it so well? I was most impressed with the rendition of the old folk standard "Hey Joe" done in a truegrass style (yes, that's Truegrass, the way it should be done!) lifting the tempo & feel of a well known classic, breathing new life into it, - way to go, Jerry! And there are other styles here too, from stark. almost dark journeys beautifully travelled to jazzy-jump-in-'n'- fill-yer-boots bop style, to my delight a couple of wonderful Country tone-filled tunes, with a cracking two-step as a final track. Its a feast for all lovers of light & shade, a big sound, an intrigue of tones, perfect musicianship par excellence, pristine production values, & what about that band.......this album sets a new standard & I cannot recommend it too highly.
