I always look forward to the new Christmas novels every year, and What a Lady Needs for Christmas, the fourth novel in the MacGregor series by Grace Burrowes, doesn’t disappoint. A family holiday gathering at an estate in the Scottish Highlands serves as the backdrop for the story filled with interesting characters, plot twists, holiday traditions and amorous rabbits.
Lady Joan Flynn finds herself in an unexpected situation just before the holidays, and the only solution she can imagine is to find a husband as soon as possible. A fortunate twist finds her travelling with Dante Hartwell, a widowed father of two, who agrees to marry her. Not only does marriage to Joan provide his children with a mother, but it also offers many social and business advantages. Joan and Dante are both strong, very likeable characters, and even though their motivations for marriage are questionable, they both are determined to make their marriage work.
There are many secondary characters that enrich the story, and while the author is very careful to explain the relationship of each to the others, I still had trouble keeping them all straight. The plot can definitely stand alone, but I think I would have understood many of the background characters better if I had read the previous novels in the series.
The picture painted by the author of the Christmas celebration was very rich in color and tradition. From the mistletoe hung throughout the estate, to each person taking their turn to stir the Christmas pudding, the joy of Christmas was evident throughout.
What a Lady Needs for Christmas will be released on October 7, 2014. I am giving it four stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is maybe worth reading once. It starts out well, engaging story and interesting, unusual characters.

Then right after the marriage, the plot goes off the rails. The heroine has told the hero all about the episode that has ruined her reputation, so when the man involved starts blackmailing her, any sensible woman would have told her husband and asked for his help. Not this heroine. Plus, the hero, who has already about figured out who the man is, when seeing his wife talking to him, immediately assumes they are having an affair. Yes, what woman doesn't start an affair with a man who's sexually assaulted her.

The second problem is at the end of the book. One of the mills burns down when the insurance has lapsed. At that point, I don't remember which of the three owners in the family own that mill. Is it the hero, who then becomes even more short of money, since the investors supporting its rebuilding will have to be paid back?

And what's the implication of handling over the management to the associate? What is the hero planning on doing for the rest of his working life? Does he manage the recently acquired dress shop?

A clearer ending is needed. All in all, this book needed more work before it was released.

I usually love GB's books. This one, not so much. The hero is great--blunt, sexy, strong, confident. The heroine was somewhat interesting--especially her descriptions of material, dress designs, etc. But there were some odd elements of the story. For example, I understand maybe not "satisfying" her the first time, and given his previous marriage, his concerns. But that dragged on so long, and when"it" finally happened, it was somewhat "anti-climactic." And the buildup of her falling in love with him was confusing--does she or doesn't she? And the fire and no insurance big scare just gets too quickly glossed over and taken care of by "investors." Story felt rushed and without appropriate buildup in some areas, and dragged on interminably in others. Maybe a better substantive edit might have helped? Read it to enjoy Dante. But don't expect a really good story.

I have never been disappointed in a Grace Burrowes until now. This heroine was TOO MUCH of the blushing virgin and this hero was TOO MUCH of the gruff uncommunicative tall handsome guy. The book seems to have been put together by the number: so many pages of getting the H and h to meet each other, x number of pages where they are alone together, x number of sexual scenes, etc. But all written without any heart or enthusiasm. The chemistry between the H and h was ok, but the sex between them was awful, boring, uninspiring--just normal. Don't we read romances to escape normal? Or because we want to know that someone out there is having off the charts sex, even if its fiction?? So, it took me weeks to finish this book because I never felt there was any real reason to go back to it except that it was by an author who is normally so on-target so I thought it would get better. It didn't.

Yes, all you romance lovers, Grace Burrowes has done it again. She has given us a damsel in distress, a hunky, hot hero to come to her rescue, a smarmy, evil villain and some adorable children that this reader hopes for more of in future books. So well composed and written you will lose yourself in the chill of the Victorian Scottish winter. You will have your senses assaulted by the smell of the coal fired Steam Engine trains. You will be seduced along with the heroine by a hero who is kind, good and tough when he needs to be. The romance here is slow developing but ultimately superbly sensual. This couple does not have instant sexual rapport which is unusual for the genre. The story is taking place at the holidays but that is really incidental to the plot. I highly recommend this book. I highly recommend this author.

I received this book free for review from the publisher.
