Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up--This oversized volume is filled with attractive art and artifacts. Virtually every page contains full-color photographs of mosaics, statues, murals, and everyday objects. Four chapters outline the Roman power structure and major players, the classes of citizens, discord in Caesar's armies, and the early Olympic games. Personal accounts offer glimpses into Roman life: beauty rituals, marriage customs, entertainment, superstitions, trades, and burial rites, to name a few. While the art and personal vignettes should create interest, the text may not. The small font and the lack of subtopics create a heavy look. The writing style is wordy, and the paragraphs and sentences are long. A mixed bag of excellent illustration and mediocre text.

I've been reading a lot of Roman history lately and got this book as a gift. It is very readable, and very entertaining. One of the things a most histories miss are the lives of the regular people. We all know about the Ceasars, but how did the regular people live? What was it really like? This book, with illustrations and text, tries to tell the reader - and succeeds.

This 166-page volume is a nice addition to the What Life Was Like series. Every page is filled with color photos of maps, statuary, wall paintings, and everyday objects - children's toys, soldiers gear, bathing implements, coins, rings, etc. It's written for the casual reader with vivid, easy to read text. Some of the subjects briefly touched upon: the lives/reigns of Julius Caesar, Augustus and Hadrian, the lives and daily routines of everyday people, soldiers and war, gladiators and games, artisans, tradespeople, etc. Also recommended: WLWL On the Banks of the Nile (Egypt 3050-30BC).

This is a quick & entertaining read for those people, school children to adults, who want an easy introduction into what life was like during anctient Roman times. It can be read in a couple of hours; format is a "coffee-table" large sized-book. If you're looking for details & insight, this is not the book for you.

I really like the "What Life Was Like" series. Rather than just a dry history book full of facts and figures, these books really make the time period come alive with stories about individuals, facts about common life (instead of just how the Caesars and Kings lived), and plenty of diagrams and pictures to help visualize just what it might have been like to live in that time and place.
Ancient Rome has always been one of my favorite periods/eras to study, and even after years of study, I found new and exciting information in this book.
