Editorial Reviews

***** "I give what the sea wants 10 stars. I want to live my life in this book and I know I'll be happy. It's realistic and fun and loving and all I hope for. Karin Cox you rock!" Linda, Kalpa's Book Blog

***** "
The chemistry and sexual tension between Julz and Ash is off the charts and has you on the edge of your seat until the end. I'm a sucker for good epilogue and the ending of What The Sea Wants made my heart sing and let me be at peace with the journey. A great roller coaster ride about teenage love and its ability to conquer all." Maleesha, The Romance Room.

From the Author

I feel I should warn readers straight up that while What the Sea Wants is a romance novel, it probably isn't a relaxing beach read! It is set around a fictional surfing community on Australia's east coast, where sun and surf don't just come with hot, shirtless surfers, but occasionally come with other hazards too.

Like the sea, this story is sometimes turbulent and never static. It isn't always chronological, nor does it follow the rules (when will I learn!). It's a tale of befores and afters, of how we look to the future, believing we might predict it, even if we really can't. But mostly it's a reminder that perhaps we shouldn't try. So, as you read this novel, remember that not all who are missing are lost. Sometimes life sinks us, and sometimes it throws us a lifebuoy.

I trust that international readers will forgive Aussie spellings, punctuation, and slang. As an Aussie, I felt the novel would lose authenticity if I Americanised my characters and their words to suit the US market, but I'm also a proud Aussie who wanted to share my country's many quirks with overseas readers. For those who find themselves "lost at sea", some terms are linked to a glossary in the back.
Happy reading.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Crazy Cajun Book Addicts for an honest review.

This is my first book by Karin Cox and although romance isn't her normal writing style it's a really good read. Its a book of two halves before and after and although it does jump around a bit it's still easy to follow and I really enjoyed it.

Juliette Brewer lives in the small Australian town of Willow Bay with her mum, she's a shy self confessed book nerd and was born with a Mati as her grandmother calls it ( the evil eye) she can see disasters in her dreams before they even occur but never enough information to be able to stop them.

Ash Gordon is a local surfer and life guard with a bit of a reputation with the ladies but the day he meets Julz (Juliette) he only has eyes for her.
There's is a sizzling chemistry between them straight away but they are each hiding things from each other and when disaster strikes are they be strong enough to make it thorough, both will have hell to deal with but hopefully it will make them stronger.

This isn't my first book by Karin Cox. A couple of years ago, I've read Cruxim and Creche, two paranormal fantasies that defy the norm about angels, vampires and sphinx. (Yes, you know that Egyptian creature beside the Great Pyramid? Yeah, that's the Sphinx).

What The Sea Wants is another new milestone for Karin Cox. A story with magical realism that delves on the life of Juliette Brewer, the girl who had the Evil Eye. Juliette or Julz could see disasters or misfortunes right before they take place. Like a school bus accident where some kids died. Or a shark attack in the beach. She saw them happening in her dreams, but she didn't know when or where those unfortunate events would happen. Until it was too late for her to act upon them. Such a curse, indeed.
Ash Gordon, the man who can't be moved, the apple of every ladies' eyes. He's got the reputation, alright, but nobody knew the real him: the man he truly was. And when he encountered Julz, his world (and the ocean) turned upside down.

What I actually loved about this book is the environmental awareness that the main characters disseminated throughout the story. That the ocean deserves to be treated with care and importance. That dolphins are our friends, that we should take our part in making sure the fish in the sea swim with garbage-less water. Because what the sea wants, the sea gets.
The characters, Ash and Julz are strong and deep. There's more to them than just toned body, pretty face and adoring/raging fans. Their flawed personalities make them believable and real. I even found the sexual innuendos quite a treat. And that thing that happened to Ash was something that tore a piece in my heart.

I don't read a lot of romance novels very often but Karin Cox is one of the authors in the genre I do read - why is that? Because she lends a realism that gives her stories a definite literary weight. No more is this more apparent than in What The Sea Wants where we are introduced to Willow Bay - an Australian coastal town where the characters talk colloquially, act as you would expect people to act under ordinary and extraordinary circumstances, and give you a sense of what it's like to be there; on the beach, in the sea, falling in love. The author expertly wrings poignancy from the relationships and situations presented which acts as a balance to the sentimental moments; once again making it all feel that more real. There are some paranormal elements to the story and these sit in the background working subtly throughout the narrative and tying in with the underlying theme that the sea, much like life, does as it pleases, takes what it wants, and cannot be fought against but can be accepted. And when it is, events that seem like miracles can happen. What The Sea Wants is a novel not only for the discerning romance reader but for everyone.

Wow - Couldn't put What The Sea Wants down. A well written story in a down to earth fabric of teenage life set in an Australian coastal town. Cox has an innate ability to immediately connect you with her characters (even vampires in her earlier writings!) and What The Sea Wants proves yet again her skill in keeping you turning the page. The story respects the reader's ability to jump from inside the story to introspective thought, and this further consolidates the readers connection with the characters as the story develops. A beautiful story of love and loss, intuition and strength of spirit that is a pleasure to read. I am waiting to see What is next from Karin Cox.
