What Did You Say? An Unexpected Journey Into the World of Hearing Loss
Monique . Hammond

Imagine having your head immersed in a whirlpool or even standing in the middle of a rain forest where the sounds of the water flow and the air is dank and damp. Imagine listening to a concert where the music is so loud it's deafening and the end result leaves holding your ears plus a huge headache. So many of us take our five senses for granted never realizing how each one plays a vital role in our every day lives helping us to function. Teaching her new class, hospital pharmacist, Monique Hammond would experience something during her early evening session that would alert her to the fact that something was wrong yet what she had no idea. Trying to focus on the questions asked by her students and not wanting to give away that she was having serious problems hearing what they were trying to say, she soon realized that something was clouding the hearing in her left ear. It was almost as if a huge fog descended upon her left ear, one that was so thick that the end result would change her life forever. Popping in her ears, almost a thumping feeling, strange sensations and then what follows would definitely frighten anyone.

Relating the problem to her husband his immediate response was to seek medical help but Monique thought that she might have a virus or some type of infection and opted for waiting until the following morning to contact her own doctor. But, sometimes circumstances play their own hand and all too often what we do not want to do we have no choice but to as her condition became grave, her ability to stand was hampered and she no longer had the capacity to hold foods or liquids. Despite her own feelings against going to the ER she had no choice.

Monique Hammond takes a human look at how hearing loss can affect
each one of us. A careful researcher and medical professional who understands the
ear and its relationship to the body as well as the importance of hearing and balance
in our daily lives also gives us her story of survival when tinnitus strikes.
The book is a resource for anyone with a family member who suffers from any
number of ear-related diseases and conditions. It's a helpful reference for parents
who want to protect the hearing of their young children and teen agers. It's also a find
for anyone who is getting older and may not hear as well as in the past. It's for
those people who don't want to use hearing aids and should know more about them. Thank you for
giving us such solid information about one of our most important senses.

This book has a wealth of information with wonderful diagrams that illustrate the mystery of the ear and hearing ability. These diagrams were expertly drawn by the author. Monique's clever writing style engages the reader. She displays a good sense of humor describing how she coped with a hearing loss and her journey to understand it better. This approach helps people be more informed about a topic many want to avoid exploring. Her checklists for taking action are excellent and provide a wonderful roadmap for learning more about potential hearing challenges.

Very helpful book for those with hearing loss. Even though I've been suffering with hearing loss for nine years, I didn't know that much about it. Reading Monique's book provided much needed education for me. She put together a well organized book full of information and resources and she shared her personal story with us. I applaud her for her hard work of doing the research and putting in one place for us.

There are so many things that people are going through today that it sometimes might seem as though there is no good news any where. If we believe this, then we are certainly missing out on what we can learn even when going through a challenge.
er
For Monique Hammond it was hearing loss that threatened to sideline her, making her feel not just unsure of herself but in many ways inadequate. In her book WHAT DID YOU SAY? we are able to see not just how she was able to learn from the loss of her hearing but how it really helped her to listen to what her body and life were trying to teach her.

This book was powerful on so many levels. For one it reminds us that no matter what situation we are facing it is important to think about what is today instead of what was. There is also a great lesson when it comes to accepting that which can not be changed. Monique had to do it when she realized there was no cure for her hearing loss, and sometimes we have to do the same thing when it comes to situations where there is no perfect answer or conclusion.

We also have to be open to allowing others to show they care and realize that we are not alone in what we are facing. Monique's husband found an amazing support group that brought this point home, and there are other individuals sometimes right around us that can keep us focused instead of going backwards.

No matter who you are or what you are facing WHAT DID YOU SAY? speaks to the heart. All we have to do is open it up to receive it.
