A mystery/ thriller that's both.

Centered on four kids finishing their final year of high school in an upper class small town in western Massachusetts, this story starts with a big question that just gets bigger and bigger for most of the book before the surprising answers start to appear. The mystery pulls you along, and the short chapters (three or four pages) keep you reading in a "just one more" sort of way.
The four main characters, a band of friends, awake groggy and unable to remember just what happened the day and night before, but it quickly is apparent that "something" happened, and it probably wan't good. As they try to piece together the events of the previous day, their friendship is tested and stretched, but their connections with each other are strong and they forge forward, sometime in surprising ways.
Gievn the mystery nature of the book, it's tough to tell too much without starting to give it away. Just know the ending grows from the story being told, and while surprising, it has a satisfying feel to it. It's not just pulled out to surprise you, but grows from the story itself.
The writing is crisp and quick, the main characters well drawn and recognizable to those who have gone to high school, even if there are a few quirks thrown in for good measure. It all holds together weel

What We Kill was featured yesterday on BookBub. I thought this would be a great time to share a review. I read this book when it first came out. As you know, I live in that grey area between Western, Massachusetts and Connecticut, and I love that this book takes place there. This book is a thriller like no other. Four teenagers wake up in the woods to sirens blaring. One has lost his glass eye, one has a triangle burned into his arm, one has lost her pants, and the last is covered in blood. In an affluent town where nothing ever goes wrong, something has. This book is one of those psychological thrillers that pulls you in from the first sentence and never lets you go. The ending is both shocking and believable. Gripping, chilling, and intense, What We Kill will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

WHAT WE KILL by Howard Odentz is a mystery-thriller centered on four friends who can't remember the night before...

Even though the story moves at a steady pace, alternating bits and pieces of memory with backstories of their adolescent lives is quite maddening. I read the book in one sitting because I had to know what in the hell happened to them. The ending is completely worth the effort. I think this story would make a great movie.

At first, I couldn't stand the narrator's constant need to explain their family situations and relationships with one another, but when a huge secret is revealed towards the end, I understood why the author laid out every detail of their personal issues.

Odentz has a special gift for mixing young people and family drama into horrifying stories, in the most surprising ways. Not only do I recommend this novel, I also suggest reading his stories, SNOW and BONES.

Here's a story that took off quickly and never let down. There was a lot going on all the time, yet it was easy to follow. I felt the last twenty pages or so kind of slowed down, but then the story did have to get wrapped up. The four main characters kind of went back and forth between likable and not, but for the most part, they were four you could feel for. This was a quick read that was one that was not easy to put down, although it was not one that demanded to be read in a single sitting. As for the plot, I found it interesting if a little improbable but certainly not dull. The Marcy thing threw me, but there were plenty of clues to what was going on and on occasion I was even thinking along the lines that eventually unfolded. Bottom line, I liked it and would read more by this author.

This was a great page turner. Four friends wake up with no memory of the night before. One covered in blood, one missing his eye, one branded, and one with no pants on. The same morning a serial killer is discovered in their town. As the story progresses there is some connection between the four friends and the murderer, but what. There were a couple twists that took me by surprise and others I started to suspect. Anders is a good guy, that's all I'll say. As for the ending, it was excellent. This was a great book. Do yourself a favor and buy and it read. You won't be sorry.

An interesting take on a lost-weekend theme, What We Kill starts slow but picks up and moves along to a satisfying conclusion. The story opens with four high school seniors awakening in the woods, confused and with no recollection of how they got there. One is missing her pants, another has lost his glass eye. A third has been branded on his arm, and the fourth is drenched in someone else's blood. What follows is a thriller with some twists and turns you won't necessarily see coming.

Author Howard Odentz has crafted a timely tale, incorporating themes that ring true to today's events. This is a whatdunit rather that a whodunit; narrated by one of the youths, voices and situations are realistically drawn. While I considered early on abandoning the tale, I was ultimately pleased I stuck with it. It's worth it.

This is one of those books that grabs you, pulls you in, and doesn't even tap the brakes. The characters are flawed, relatable, and for the most part, likeable. The storyline is tight...there are no loose ends here. I loved the way the mystery played out and how deeply involved I became with the characters. This isn't your typical gore filled, rush to an ending, kill everyone, horror novel. It's intelligent, suspenseful, and just a top notch story with rich characterization. I absolutely LOVED it! I'm a prolific reader and this is one of the absolute best of the genre. You will not be sorry...except that it's over and you're still enamored with the characters.

What a haunting and beautiful story! Exquisite writing and fantastic storytelling bring this plot to life. The first person narration by Weston is very authentic and all the 4 main characters are fully formed and breathe tension into the plot. The pacing is excellent, the chronology precise. The metaphors and similes, the refined word unions elevate this genre of book greatly. And icing on the cake is the unique story. This raises the bar for this class of book. I am now going to download more by this author.
