What to Do When You Don't Want to Be Apart: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Separation Anxiety (What-to-Do Guides for Kids Series) Kindle Edition
Hot air balloon pilots have wonderful adventures, where they get to see things they have never seen before and learn all about the world outside.
Flying a hot air balloon sounds like a lot of fun to some kids. But for other kids, the idea of flying off on their own, away from their parents or homes, doesn't sound like fun at all. If you feel scared when you do something alone or away from your parents, this book is for you!
What to Do When You Don't Want to Be Apart guides children and their parents through the emotions underlying separation anxiety using strategies and techniques based on cognitive-behavioral principles. This interactive self-help book is the complete resource for educating, motivating, and empowering children to overcome separation anxiety — so they can become the confident pilots of their very own hot air balloons!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024This book really helped my six year old… therefore, helped mom and dad , too! :)
We would work through a chapter together each day before school. Vocalizing and writing down her feelings eased her fears a bit , and the step by step plans helped motivate and comfort her. The verbiage used was simple and encouraging!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018This is an perfect book for kiddos with separation anxiety. My 6 year old had a really tough time with the transition into 1st grade. After many tears had been shed, from her and I, we spoke with a child psychologist who recommended this book. I can not say enough good things about it. I love that it is written to the child. My daughter made an instant connection with this book and could easily understand the message.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2023My daughter entered first grade last month and has been experiencing separation anxiety since she spent the summer at home. Our pediatrician recommended this book series to help her develop coping techniques and provide conversation starts/talking points so that I can help her at home. We are about 75 to 80% of the way through the book and I've noticed a great improvement. One of the points in the book that continues to stick with her is that "Mom always comes back". The book suggested we write it down, so we put it on a post-it note and she carries it with her in her backpack. When she starts to feel nervous, we repeat the mantra together.
I liked that the book is broken up into manageable chapters that we could read and discuss together in our limited spare time. For the brainstorming parts, we would work together on coming up with solutions, and I would do the writing, the space was a bit limited for a 6 year olds handwriting. Additionally, I would love to see this in a spiral bound version, for ease of writing.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2018My daughter was really struggling with split homes and after reading through this book, she was helping her classmates "get rid of dark clouds so they could fly". It made a huge difference!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2023My son and I talk about this book often. It helped him get through the first few weeks of kindergarten!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2018I use this in my work as a child therapist. It's a good book, but the balloon analogy is a bit hard to connect with for some of the younger kids, like ages 6-7. It works better for ages 8-10.

Tash078Reviewed in Australia on August 22, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Good tool for separation anxiety
I have used this a lot for kids with separation anxiety. It provided a nice guide to therapy, with a lovely metaphor of hot-air ballooning as a framework. I then expanded on each section using my own tools. Great for counsellors and parents.
