Old Fashioned Honesty - that's What Works

I'm late 50's. I've seen Cal Thomas interviewed (seldom) and in the past - his interviews and jokes (when I have seen him on television) always strike me as "Corny", but respectful, nice, conservative, but not a leading voice.

He was the moderator at the MRC dis-honors award ceremony this year, which I watched. He followed suit, corny, polite, not an 'attack dog'. This always bothers me with many "Conservatives" who have a media voice - because the progressive left are so destructive and attack prone - and so many Conservatives are content to just shut up. I discounted Cal Thomas for this reason.
But I just bought his book, "What Works" - on a whim and a recommendation by a friend.

Did any of you ever read "The Road Less Traveled" by Scott Peck? It's like a confrontation between the "Society" forced down your throat by media, and the complete and utter truth of life, presented very well by Peck. No contest right? Its one of the highest selling books in the history of earth. He presented simple, unadorned, and right to the $%##% point truth. Well "WHAT WORKS" operates on the same principles; REASON and the common experience that virtually all humans have had - these principles are universal.

Illogical and ignorance of Progressive "Principles" are posed very simply, politely, and with their obvious destruction in Cal's book. Similar to Peck's book, he doesn't trash the progressives personally, but instead presents what anyone from the planet Earth knows about the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and others. It exposes the most basic and dare I say "human" objections to the destructive Progressive philosophy.

So, here are my Conclusions. If you're a) from Earth, and b) "Know" that there's something really, really wrong with what the media and the body politic are presenting to you, and c) can't put your finger on what's wrong with the bs that you are 'supposed' to accept as truth, then buy this book.

I haven't changed my mind about Cal Thomas (he's still kind of corny) except that I now realize that "Respectful and Courteous" can still be a very powerful way to win the opinions and respect of others. He won me over.

Thomas has a conservative and Biblical view of the world scene that we need to reestablish if America is to stave off the destructive philosophy and action that is more and more prevalent in our country and world! We seem to forget that there are very real forces at work that want to tear down not just the traditional values, but in the process, the very way of life that we have established. Thank you Cal Thomas for your unashamed hard hitting book. Every American should read it!

Cal Thomas' new book "What Works," is a guidebook that every citizen and government official should read - like a roadmap to get us from the ditch back onto the highway!

Mr. Thomas has touched every American institution. He sounds a bit like Bill Cosby in places (work hard, keep the family together, obey the laws, etc.), but is also outspoken, and exposes the hypocrisy of the government.

"What Works" works! And will work, if America gives it the opportunity.

This book is so well written. I stayed busy trying to remember the wise statements. Everyone should read this book to get the exposure to the biblical wisdom contained here-in. I had no idea that Mr. Thomas was such a christian. This book helped me tie my religion to the present day worldly happenings. Reading this was time well spent. I plan to read more of Cal Thomas' books. Thank you Cal, the world needed this.

Why "What Works" did not Work for me.

Though correct, we as a nation should learn from the past, this book is disappointing. Not specific enough and often repetitive. There is nothing really new here, as most has been stated in other recent books by other authors in a more "readable" and organized approach. (I am a conservative and a Christian so I am being objective here). I am sure that the date mentioned concerning Calvin Coolidge on page 98 is incorrect, as he was the Vice-President under Harding from 1920 till Harding's death, and in 1917, Wilson was President after being re-elected in 1916. My favorite point was the first full paragraph on page 76 concerning Jesus, Rome, secular gov., etc.
Cal Thomas is a man of good character and ideas, and this book should have been a lot better.
