Now, I am not one to shy away from smut. I love it. I praise it. And I have read some of the raunchiest things and it didn't even bat an eye. And yet, something about this book, I truly don't know what it was (maybe it was the Christmasy backdrop or whatever) but God was it dirty. I mean it's not the dirtiest thing ever that's for sure. But it's dirty. And I mean that in the best way possible. Something about the dynamic between Theodore and Sam just did it for me. It was great.
Then there's the angst, which I'm also no stranger to. But again there was something about this book, like when Sam finally, for lack of a better word, confronts Theodore about their arrangement had me holding my chest in pain. What is wrong with me!? That's how you know it's some good a** angst though, just saying.
All of this is to say, this book affected me. Not like in some life altering, my life is forever changed kind of way but I definitely wasn't expecting to get what I got out of it. And what I got was a full-fledged story with completely three-dimensional characters. These characters had friends, they had family, the side characters even had agency and played an important role! Can I get a thank you for Ian and Abigail! I even like Logan for being a good big brother. And I absolutely loved how neither Sam nor Theodore changed who they were for each other. Sam realize love isn't enough sometimes. You can't be someones secret forever. Theodore finally acknowledged he needs to want to change for himself before he can be with some else. And that's not a spoiler. It's a romance with an HEA. Y'all knew they were going to get together.
Anyways go read it. It's great. There's even therapy guys, therapy! But if you need more of an excuse to pick it up, they're British. That's the thing for people right? 7 solid stars.
Sam was just awesome throughout this story... Theodore seriously took some getting used to.. but he grew on me... loved the realism of the 6th month gap till the reunion!
I think the leads were really well suited, despite their age difference, their differences in their backgrounds and upbringing, and I liked that they ended up where they did, which was realistic and not something faux and fleeting. I think they're in it for a long time, though I'm not sure that I saw a HEA for them.
The 'Mr Farrell' thing they had going, I found more OK than the 'Daddy-sweet boy' thing that Sam and Theodore progressed to, but that's a personal preference. There was nothing ick about the guys' relationship. I thought how Sam's family reacted to the news that their son was dating someone so old was not surprising, and tbh, I think the assumptions and prejudice were not entirely unreasonable. It all stemmed from genuine love and concern, not hatred.
The only weird part for me, is that we're told Theodore is an older guy who's not kept himself in shape, so to have him wearing a G-string was not an image I wanted in my head, lol! One of the nicest surprises here is that someone made out to be a bit of a 'posterior hole' (the original choice of words got this review rejected!) and a bully turned out to be the exact opposite. Normally I wouldn't buy that kind of about-face, but the author tied it in really well to the tale, and showed us that we can't assume things about people until we take the time to get to know them.
This was a nice tale, low key as I expect UK-set tales to be, with warmth and sweetness.

I loved the realism in this story, the MC’s were strong characters and the friends and Sam’s brother were fantastic. Highly recommend this book

Funny, sweet and so endearing (& that's just the first few chapters!)
I found this story and these characters so endearing!! This story lifted my mood and gave me all the feels! I loved both Sam and Theodore. While they each have their flaws, troubles, and desires, Colette balanced all their nuances perfectly!
I felt for troubled and closeted Theodore and his internalized homophobia. Colette took care to address this and slowly brought Theo out of his shell and allowed him to challenge his upbringing and eventually find peace in himself.
Sam was just adorable! He had moments of sass that was just adorable but his soft and shy nature was what endeared him to me. I loved that he tried to take the lead and put himself out there even though he was scared and it when against his submissive desires but it balanced so well with Theo's needs and allowed for intimacy and their unique connection to flourish.
While set at Christmas, I would happily dive into this story at any time of year! If you'd like a book with a little kink and a lot of feels then look no further! I loved it!
Thanks for reading!
