As she grows up, Maya witnesses the talents of those around her (some surpassing her own talents), yet she still dreams of and enjoys the things she loves most. In the end (and now an adult), Maya becomes every one of those things in one form or another.
It's a simple life lesson that illustrates that one should hold onto, and pursue one's dreams – although sometimes the outcome may not be exactly as you planned, you are still the creator of your own destiny.
I like this book because it reminds me of some of the classic children's books I read as a kid myself. It contains subtle turns that often aren't present in kids' books today.
