By JEREMY SAXON on October 19, 2004
Format: Audio CD
When my brother was an infant, in 1961 or so, there were two ways to get him to sleep. One, let him cry himself to sleep. Two, put on this album, and he'd stop the crying, lie back, end of story.

Further, I know of NO album that has lasted as well as this one, including anything the Beatles ever recorded.

You know the title song, of course, and it's the lead song on the album. But once that's done, fasten your seatbelt for "Jumpin in the Morning", "You Be My Baby", "What Kind of Man Are You", "Tell Me How Do You Feel", all the way on through to "That's Enough". It's a fine, fine ride, one I've taken myself hundreds of times already.

Charles had a thing about applying himself to different styles of music. On the liner notes of this one, as I remember, he mentions he'd played in some "hillbilly" bands in Florida when he was younger, liked that music fine, and wouldn't mind recording some of it some time. Yes, he was predicting the "Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music" albums he did, from which we know "I Can't Stop Loving You" and others.

Well, this album was his fling at doing "Rock & Roll" music. It doesn't sound like it to me, it just sounds like Ray, that voice, that piano, those arrangements, and a WONDERFUL set of songs by himself, Doc Pomus, Percy Mayfield and others, and a whole lot of competence going on in the studio.

If there were one album about which I could say "Don't think, just buy it," this would be the one.

As a pure rhythm and blues exercise, Ray Charles rarely got better than this over the course of an entire album. There isn't really a weak spot to be found, not even when Charles lays away from the mike and lets Margie Hendricks and the Raelettes take the front for "What Kind of Man Are You?" The band is playing their most solid grooves and pulses, the leader sometimes takes them to outer territories ("You Be My Baby" is quite an exercise in Latinesque polyrhythm), and Charles is singing like his very existence depends on it---which he always did, in his Atlantic years, but the commitment he delivers here makes his previous work seem like dress rehearsals. It's not easy picking any single album with which someone should begin exploring Charles's Atlantic work, but "What'd I Say" is a powerful candidate for that job and for leading the case for Ray Charles as the arguable founder of soul music.

This is one of Ray's first LPs were he rocks with the suggestive song for it's time. This is a great CD with the original version of What'd I Say and other gems. Ray was an inovator in the many genres of music that he sang over his very successful career. If you are a Ray Charles fan this is a great album for your collection.

This has his original What'd I say on it plus some bonus songs. All of the songs are great, but the bonus songs are of a lower volume than the first twelve songs, so My rating is simply for stars for the first 12 songs and three stars for the remainder. Other than the volume difference it is still a solid purchase. It's a great album for the price.

This is the Best Ray Charles album ever. It is still fresh, raw, with great back up vocals, sexy sax, and The Genius at his bluesy best. It is Ray rockin in his vocals and piano. Dont get no better than this.

Fantastic. Each tune is a jewel. Ray, and his band and back-up singers perform beautifully. A "must have" in any serious collection of Ray's recorded works.
