Product description
Aimee Mann - Whatever - CD
Amazon.com
Mann has retired the 'Til Tuesday moniker, but the elements that made Everything's Different Now (1988) so superb--heartrending songs, baroque pop arrangements and lovely melodies--remains intact. Jeff Bateman

I'm with Stupid was more openly defiant and rougher, but way back in 1993 Whatever already found Mann at the peak of her emotional and musical strength. Check out the layers of distorted guitars on "I Should've Known" coupled with an irresistible melody; the Byrds-isms on "Fifty-Years after the Fair" with its wonderful vocal harmonies and McGuinn's 12-string guitar resounding; the gang voices on "Say Anything" and the poignant "4th of July". Mann even tackles a May-September romance on "Mr. Harris" and sounds as dark as Days of Open Hand-era Suzanne Vega on "Jacob Marley's Chain".
Meticulously produced (by Jon Brion), written and performed, Whatever is a pop powerhouse.
Like many others, I buy CD's instead of digital downloads precisely because I want better sound quality than MP3's; sadly, you won't find that here. You'd think that an artist with control of the record company that releases her work would take care to see that the work was released unmolested by heavy-handed compression. A shame, really.
The more mature Mann's style, as we know it from later great albums like "Bachelor No. 2, "" Lost in Space "and" Charmer "you will also find examples of. Not least, the beautiful ballad "Stupid Thing" is a highlight. I also fell for the peculiar "Jacob Marley's Chain", which lyrically is based on Charles Dickens old "A Christmas Carol".
The album spans musically seen very wide, from simply arranged songs over tracks with orchestral backing till pure power-pop ala The Bangles and Kim Wilde.

4th of July
