Digitally remastered two CD set containing three classic albums from the Canadian Rock veterans: Wheatfield Soul (1968), Canned Wheat (1969) and Shared the Land (1970). What makes Wheatfield Soul so sought after is inventive themes that found their way onto later albums. 'These Eyes' remains timeless; it is the song that stands out as the masterpiece on this creative album. Canned Wheat introduced several of the bands most remembered songs and still sounds incredibly fresh, a product from the days of Classic Rock. Recorded in the aftermath of Randy Bachman's departure, Share the Land was a better album than anyone expected. It was the biggest selling original album in their career. Burton Cummings is in excellent voice and the new double lead guitar team of Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw gave the band a greater range than they had before.

PRO: All tracks from their original vinyl releases are here. Canned Wheat and Share the Land have bonus tracks. Wheatfield Soul does not have bonus tracks on this collection. No hiss from the master recording tapes. Extra intro and trailing music from Undun and No Time have been restored but placed with the wrong song. For example, the frantic piano is placed at the end of "Laughing" instead of the beginning of "Undun" where it belongs. The mastering engineer/producer were obviously not Guess Who fans.
CON: HORRIBLE job at remastering to CD. These CD's have fallen prey to the "loudness wars" where the ham-fisted mastering engineer/producer has turned up the volume on the quiet parts of the songs on these CDs to shouting levels. This does not make for a good listening experience over headphones as you will experience "ear fatigue". Over speakers, these will fare better. Had I known that these songs had been compressed, I would have passed on this. Check your favorite video search engine and type "loudness wars" for those of you unfamiliar with the term. Thank you IronBird Records/Sony Music - I will definitely donate this to my local library. I hope the Budda re-releases will be better.
I originally gave 2 stars but dropped it to 1 due to Amazon's lameness filter that forbids links that demonstrate "loudness war".
"Species Hawk" on Youtube and it's well worth tracking down. Other than these problems this set is well worth picking up. The seperate cd's are out of print and "Share The Land" and "Wheatfield Soul" are both going for crazy prices. I give this set 4 stars because of the mastering problem and the missing track. Other than that it's worth a 5 star rating.
Rich guitar work, great rhythm, harmony on the vocals, and lyrics that are understandable!
I own other Guess Who albums, but not these. This purchase was a very good value and a pleasure to add to my listening collection.
Wheatfield Blues, Share the Land, and Canned Wheat, all have good songs, some great songs.
I was motivated to get beyone their greatest hits, to see what else they did.
Some of it is really great!
