Amazon.com Review

This is the second box set in Robert Jordan's epic bestselling series, the Wheel of Time. The first set included The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt, and The Dragon Reborn. The follow-up includes the next three books of the series. The Shadow Rising, The Fires of Heaven, and Lord of Chaos continue the great saga of Rand, the Dragon Reborn in a world broken in two by unimaginably powerful forces.

About the Author

Robert Jordan was born in 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina. He taught himself to read when he was four with the incidental aid of a twelve-years-older brother, and was tackling Mark Twain and Jules Verne by five. He is a graduate of The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics. He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Army; among his decorations are the Distinguished Flying Cross with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with "V" and bronze oak leaf cluster, and two Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses with palm. A history buff, he has also written dance and theater criticism and enjoyed the outdoor sports of hunting, fishing, and sailing, and the indoor sports of poker, chess, pool, and pipe collecting.
Robert Jordan began writing in 1977 and went on to write The Wheel of Time®, one of the most important and best selling series in the history of fantasy publishing with over 14 million copies sold in North America, and countless more sold abroad.
Robert Jordan died on September 16, 2007, after a courageous battle with the rare blood disease amyloidosis.

Years ago I read The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. I was delighted to find the Jordan series to be even better and longer. I just completed the last book and have started reading the first again. On rereading, it reveals more depth than I had seen the first time through. If you want to lose yourself in an exciting world that never was, read these books. My only regret is that there aren't more of them.

The wheel of time books are simply; spellbinding. The imagination and innovation in this epic saga rival Stephen Donaldsons' 'Thomas Covenant the unbeliever.' The grand scale can't be compared it stands alone in fantasy literature. Tolkein has for so many years been the yard stick by which others fantasy writers are measured, I believe there is now another yard stick. When a book makes you feel alive, vibrant and intoxicated it must be good. All of the books in the wheel of time series have had this effect on me. My heartfelt thanks go to Robert for giving me this gift. My only request is Robert hurry to write Book 9. If anyone can help me with an expected date I would be eternally grateful.

While looking for something to fill the LONG void between the A Game of Thrones books, a number of people recommended The Wheel of Time series. I decided to jump in with the first box set (The Wheel of Time, Boxed Set I, Books 1-3: The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt, The Dragon Reborn). While quite a bit different than A Game of Thrones (significantly less sex, violence and tamer language), I found the Wheel of Time world to be engrossing, and knew I was in for the long haul. The second set of books didn't disappoint.

Honestly, I enjoyed this set of three books more than the first three. In particular, we get to watch a number of characters grow and change in ways we couldn't anticipate. Rand, Mat, Egwene, and the rest grow and change (I wouldn't necessarily use the word mature), while a number of characters and plots bloom around them. A constant criticism of this series is that the world Jordan builds is simply too big: he never ties off a plot neatly, while instead introduces several others. While I'll admit to losing track of some plot lines in the later books, I think that by reading this series consecutively (i.e. no 1-2 year breaks while waiting for the next book to come out), Jordan's writing shines, and the reader is able to more easily keep track of the wealth of characters and happenings that make his world so very rich.

I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoyed the first three. If you didn't enjoy the first three...I suggest you probably try a different series ;).

One of the all-time best series I've ever read. On par, if not better than, Game of Thrones. This series is a must-read. You can't put the book down once you start. My boyfriend and I have been reading them at the same time, and now we're in a battle to see who gets the next book first! Seriously, Robert Jordan has created a masterpiece that keeps you on your toes with well-developed, complex characters and tons of twists you never see coming. He is an amazing writer and I have to give him props on keeping such a complex story in sync with all the details. Each book just gets better and better, which doesn't seem possible after you've read the first because it was SO good, but, literally, the farther in you get, the crazier the story gets and the more amazing. Do not hesitate to buy this series, it will not disappoint.

Robert Jordan is INCREDIBLE! This series was my introduction to fantasy (and I went in with a less than willing attitude) and I am 100% hooked and addicted! It's very detailed, characters are very well developed, as are the overarching situations and plots.

if you have not read the wheel of time series, then a box set is a great way to go

If I ever read the wheel of time series, I'll probably review the books. I started buying them because I have liked just about all of Brandon Sanderson's books and he finished this series with Robert Jordan. I will say that my wife has finished all 14 books with-in about 3 months. So something must be good with the series.

have read these books many years ago, but just as enjoyable second time around. The only thing that is kind of irritating is the way he describes someone each and every time they come back into the storyline.
