Blue is a little bird with a big heart, helping her friend Egg find its home in the sweet story of WHEN BLUE MET EGG. What starts as a quest for Blue quickly transforms to a friendship where Blue can't imagine a day, a week, or a month passing without Egg at her side. In the end, Blue discovers that friends can change over time, but that just means something lovely can grow between two great pals. This is the type of picture book that kids will want to read again and again because the illustrations have so much to discover. Ward works in cut paper, which means that fun images such as maps, equations, postmarks, and other ephemera might be glossed over in one reading only to be spied during another. This picture book will definitely appeal to those who love New York City, adventurers, and nature lovers alike. There's nothing more adorable than Blue ice skating or visiting the Statue of Liberty. Ok, well maybe holding up the UPC code on the back of the book. Too cute! Can't wait for Ward's next book. I hear it is something about a polar bear...should be quite a rumpus.

When Blue Met Egg is my favorite book today because in part, well it's adorable and beautifully illustrated. But as any librarian knows, "adorableness" in children's books is overrated... because it's everywhere in our collections. An adorable book only rises above the other fluff by having additional qualities. This book not only has a New York City setting (see cover for my favorite building), but I just love Blue. Blue, like many young beings, has that inexplicable talent for making the most unlikely friends in an unconditional, truly heartfelt and honest way. Blue takes his new friend Egg everywhere. For months. Until Egg begins to appear somewhat under the weather, and starts to lose weight and get smaller... as we sometimes do when we are not well. It is this moment in the story where my chest tightens and I feel tears behind my eyes for fear that Blue will be met with heartbreak and disillusionment... and in turn lose his innocence and interminably kind spirit. Seriously, this was my response. Maybe it was the lack of caffeine, my fragile emotional state, or just the fact that for a short children's story- this book is well written and touching. Read it so I don't have to spoil the ending.

Since we learned we're expecting, my husband and I have purchased several dozen picture books to read for fun and to transition into parenting. We happened to come across this one while visiting New York, and we think it is one of the very best we have in our collection! The story is sweet and clever, and the colors and pictures reveal something new on each read. While I can't say for sure how our child will one day feel about the book, I'm pretty confident he'll like it too. We've bought copies from Amazon for our other friends who are expecting, particularly those with some connection to New York City, since the book is set there and references the subway and different sites.

This is a clever and creative picture book. Visitors to NY and especially New Yorkers will love the book for the depictions of its well known sites. Illustrations are lovely, story is sweet, ending has a punch. As a retired educator and now a children's author, I am in awe of the picture book that has it all. And this one does!

The illustration and the story are fabulous! My kids and I loved taking a closer look at how the illustrator used many different types of paper to make the pictures -- the buildings are sooo cool! The conclusion to this book is perfect! I highly recommend this for parents to read aloud to their children.

My four-year-old was inspired by this story. She admired Blue's plucky attitude and her desire to help. And although she was worried that the story could end sadly she was delighted when she was proved wrong. We're huge fans of illustrations that give you enough detail to pore over too, so this book is a winner in our home.
