To begin, let me say-- thank you! I received an ARC of When the Chips are Down in exchange for an honest review. I am happy to read and review anything you write, Beth Rinyu!
This is the story of a divorced Mom who's found real love when she wasn't looking for it and who's raising two twin teenage girls with their own life and love struggles. This book is real life. That's one of my favorite things about it. There are so many romance novels out there that are FABULOUS, don't get me wrong- but realistic? Not so much. This is a book that could seriously be about you, your neighbor down the street, or that crazy best friend of yours.
I loved that this book looked at multiple parts of this family. There were so many good characters in this story. We've got the star of the show, Melanie, who is so easily relatable.
Then there's that jerk of an ex-husband who everyone loves to hate (let's just be honest here), along with his twenty-something-purchased-perky new bride.
Next comes Gia and Carrie, who are so different but so similar at the same time. I love that you get to read about their life, the struggles each one of them face as they go through those dreaded high school years, but also their hope for the future.
Then there's the boys.... we've got Jason, Daniel, and Cam.
Jason-- I mean, seriously? How could you not love him?
After Jason finally gets rid of that horrible girl he's been spending time with, he finally sees the light! He sees that he deserves WAY better and he won't settle for anything less. He's crazy about Carrie, sweet and kind, loving and honest.Read more ›
She is partners with her mother in a bridal salon. One day, with the plumbing leaking she runs into the boy from high school that made her life miserable. Only he is no longer a boy but a gorgeous man. She is rather snarky to him but he doesn't remember her right away and when he does he doesn't remember being mean to her. He was quite the ladies' man in school - to everyone but her and she was the one with the biggest crush.
They get together and their story is great. A few really unexpected twists, mean girls in high school, good teachers, bad policies in school. Things that happen in real life. This was a great story. I loved the heroine being older, she was 37 close to 38 and not that old when you are 75, but she feels like she is older and not much chance of finding love again.
this is a definite read, I really do recommend it. I loved it. Great ending and a delicious story. you will love Ben!!
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know ne. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
I adored this book. It was the perfect combination of love, and family and crazy. I was hesitant going in because of the 3 different POV's, but it was actually a flawless transition back and forth that kept the story moving forward perfectly. I was glad it was more about Melanie(the mom) but I enjoyed the other perspectives as well.
Well done Beth! You have an amazing talent and gift for writing...I'm just so glad I get to experience it!
My interest was piqued by an unexpected one-nighter in Mexico that starts off the story. Then she returns to her regular life: divorced, partner with her mother at their bridal shop, and raising her twin daughters. She meets up with the popular guy from high school, who she was crushing on and is now even hotter. There is a surprising twist because of her casual sex that is funny and awkward, and her growing attraction to him.
There are some sexy scenes, heartbreaking scenes, and proof that family and love mean everything.
I rated this 4 stars because I felt that too much time was spent on the daughters' stories the expense of a longer story for their mother, especially since both daughters are featured in the next two books in the series.
