The subject matter addresses difficult issues that, while perhaps not the same in every relationship, are fundamentally issues we all face. The author builds the story well and the characters are well-developed. While I did find the story moving, I think the impact would have been greater if the main part of the story wasn't told as a flashback.
This is an easy read that pulls you in. The material addresses very real and challenging issues, but in a way that inspires perseverance and hope. Definitely worth the read.
Stephen King recommends that all authors read Part 2 Section 18 of Strunk and White, which is headed, “Omit needless words.” I deducted one star because the author has a tendency to use needless words. For instance, "of course no one would ever be good enough for her daughter, in her mind." The "in her mind" is redundant as we already know of the mother's dislike for her son-in-law. Dr Leven disappeared as quickly as she had come," is redundant as the dialogue had already told us what she's going to do. Some of the dialogue is also stilted. For instance, "I am Dr Davis. I am the surgeon on your wife's case." I think Dr Davis would've said, "I'm Dr Davis, your wife's surgeon."
Did the wordiness detract from my enjoyment of the story? Not in the slightest! I have a tendency to read sentences and dialogue and ask myself how can I shorten them? Despite this idiosyncrasy, I still got a great deal of pleasure from this story. I highly recommend it.
Amber meets the love of her life but, as is true in REAL life, it's not all fairytales and unicorns. A tragedy ruins the idyllic love, and the family is uprooted not only from their peaceful Kansas life, but from their happiness as well. What I liked and appreciated was that the issues facing this love story were grounded in reality--the idea that this could happen to you.
Where I was left wanting more was a deeper emotional connection between myself and characters. I wanted to see more of the torment and pain--esp with regards to certain infidelities. I think this novel has the perfect framework for a story that just needs a little bit more show and not tell to attach us to the events even more. But as is, it's a fast, page-turning read, where I genuinely wanted to know what was going to happen next.
And, as I said before, I'm a big softy for hope and forgiveness, and stories that play up the inherent goodness in people, which this story has in spades.
So was the sweet and sour marriage of Amber and Drake. They started well. Everything looked perfect. A loving home, and loving children. It looked like nothing could go wrong. That’s when the evil forces go to work. They put all sorts of stunts and stumbling block in front of anything in life that is going smoothly. They dangle forbidden carrots in front of straight forward people, and lure them away from the right way. They do anything that will bring about the fall of good man or woman. Mind you, they never go after the bad ones. In the end, they sit back and enjoy the result of the disaster they have caused.
Only God, with His the forces of good can intervene. For no merits of ours, God may chose to save the situation. I know that the bad will always be punish, and the good, always rewarded. Find out how this tussle between the good and evil ended.
The story dragged a bit, but I enjoy it. I enjoyed particularly the absence of violence even at the points of tension in the story. A goodly story indeed.
