Ellen Chauvet’s debut novel, When Darkness Falls: The First Vampire Redemption Story, tells the story of Lexie Miles who, after the murder of her best friend Emma by vampires, finds out she comes from a long tradition of vampire hunters. She becomes part of a secret society in France where she is groomed to help fight against the evil vampires that are threatening the world. But when she meets Etienne, a powerful and seductive ‘good’ vampire working with the society, she falls in love, jeopardizing her life and future as a vampire hunter.
Ms. Chauvet creates a world set in Paris and the French countryside with vivid details of the food, architecture and landscape. It’s a great backdrop for the story and Ms. Chauvet obviously knows the region well. As the story progresses, Lexie can’t help but fall in love with Etienne, but her being a vampire executioner, things only get complicated when Lexie's desire overcomes her rational thinking. And this is really the heart of the story; Lexie’s fantasy. I had to remind myself that this is an adult fantasy and Ms. Chauvet does not shy away from the more explicit encounters between Lexie and Etienne. Perhaps it can be described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Fifty Shades of Grey…
Ms. Chauvet also manages to keep the story at a brisk pace, and there is never a dull moment. I found myself wanting to know what happens next and the story provides a few unexpected twists and turns. Also there is a good amount of humour through out, mostly provided by Lexie and her Southern one liners such as ‘Thunder crap!’ or ‘Well butter my butt and call ma a biscuit’ and my personal favourite, ‘I’m as happy as a frog sitting on a lily pad catching flies!’ All in good fun. Much of the story is told through the character’s dialogue and at times seems ‘on the nose’; characters talking about what they are going to do next and then going off and doing it. But Ms. Chauvet handles it with such enthusiasm and energy that you can’t help but to hold her hand and go along with the ride.
There are also several themes at play here; Good versus Evil (obviously), women’s sexuality and the choices we all make regarding relationships. Lexie comes across as a strong and confident woman and then at times unsure and confused. There are moments when she succumbs to the powerful and seductive Etienne, and it becomes more about passion, lust and sex. Lexie has to deal with the impact of the choices she makes and I enjoyed how the story evolved from her choices, whether they were good or bad.
When Darkness Falls is outrageous, sexy and yes somewhat campy, but that is what is so damn fun about it. You can tell that Ms. Chauvet had a lot of fun writing this story and it shows. It’s infectious and it has stayed with me after the last page. A very enjoyable read and I eagerly look forward to the next installment!

The heroine of When Darkness Falls, Lexie Miles, is a feisty spit and vinegar belle patrolling Paris dolling out her Southern witticisms like her karate kicks. She’s fun, hot and horny and is training to kick some serious vampire butt as a vampire executioner. While in one sense this is completely in line with other vampire series, Ellen Chauvet has done one or two things that haven’t been done in any other vampire novels, and most of it is about sex! She gets right down to it whether purring out her heroine’s lascivious thoughts or when a couple of characters are engaged in steamy sex. What I liked best is when she has crossed the sex scenes with the darker or violent side of things. It reminds me about what Truffaut said about Hitchcock, in this case, she does her murder scenes like love scenes and her love scenes like murder scenes. In the case of our heroine’s vampire love-interest, she keeps us guessing …does he or doesn’t he care? Is true love really true love, or just lust turned to bloodlust? This is a no holds barred sexy, fast-paced, action vampire romp. Vampire fans will be dying for the next one. Reviewed for Relentlessly Creative by Katherine Lake
About the Author
Ellen Chauvet lives in Vancouver, British Columbia and finds the months of rain and gloom particularly conducive to creating in this genre. Ellen’s love for reading and writing developed at an early age and she wrote several short stories and plays which were lost over the years and many moves. In 2003 a friend introduced her to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Ellen was fascinated by the idea of good and evil vampires. At that point she started reading every vampire novel she could find, particularly loving Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris and Laurell K. Hamilton. When Darkness Falls is the first in a series of adult fiction books called The Vampire Redemption Series.

Another “must have” for me in a work of fiction are characters that grab my interest and that I grow to care about as the story unfolds. Again, Ellen Chauvet delivered in her first effort. I found all the characters well-defined, especially Lexie. I knew I was in trouble when I found myself getting jealous of Etienne!
In the end I found the story to be highly entertaining and a fun read. It goes without saying that I’m very much looking forward to reading the next installment.
PS - Being born and raised in California, the southern colloquialisms were an added bonus.
I struggled with this book. I really enjoyed this story and was curious how it would unfold, but at the same time I absolutely hated the main character Lexie. So let me talk about the things that I liked.
The story was really good and interesting. I liked the light versus dark vampires and their secret war being waged. I loved the backstory and discovering how the Society came to be. Etienne telling Lexie his backstory was my absolute favorite part of this book. It was very interesting, informative, and created an amazing visual that helped me to understand not only Etienne, but the Society and what it stood for. It also helped with learning about Marielle and Francois. Tom and Etienne were amazing characters and I loved them so much. They added so much to the story.
As I stated I hated the main character Lexie. From the very beginning of this book Lexie was terrible to her mother who was also a very horrible character. Lexie disrespected her mother something terrible and while her mother may have deserved it, I felt it was over the top and unnecessary. Lexie was also annoying in the fact that she was very impatient when trying to discover clues and had no regard for secrecy since there was a traitor. By the end of the book her character became unbearable and weak. It drove me crazy. I would have liked to see Lexie actually train for more than one day to be a Vampire Executioner and turn into a strong female character. But that just didn't happen. So while Lexie is supposed to be a vampire executioner, there was none going on.
I did expect more from this book and the end just ended up frustrating me. The story was good enough that I do really want to know what will happen next with Kendrick, Lexie, Etienne, Francois, and Marielle. I think it will definitely get better and I look forward to the next book.

WE ARE INTRODUCED TO LEXI WHO LIVES IN PARIS. SHE IS DEVASTATED WHEN HER BEST FRIEND, EMMA IS RAPED AND MURDERED. BUT WHAT IS MORE SHOCKING IS THAT HER FRIEND WAS KILLED AND RAPED BY VAMPIRES. AT FIRST, IT IS HARD TO GRASP BUT SHE EVENTUALLY ACCEPTS ALONG WITH WHO SHE IS AND BEGINS HER TRAINING AS A VAMPIRE EXECUTIONER. WHEN LEXIE AND ETIENNE MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME, THERE IS INSTANT CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THEM. THE MORE TIME THEY SPEND TOGETHER THE DEEPER THEIR LOVE IS. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ETIENNE BETRAYS LEXI? WILL SHE BE ABLE TO SAVE HIM OR HAVE TO DESTROY HIM?
I REALLY ENJOYED READING WHEN THE DARKNESS FALLS. YOU ARE HOOKED FROM THE VERY FIRST PAGE AND WILL NOT WANT TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN. I REALLY ENJOYED THE STORY LINE AND LOVED THE CHARACTERS. THE AUTHOR DID A WONDERFUL JOB IN DEVELOPING THE CHARACTERS. I REALLY LOVED LEXI AND ETIENNE TOGETHER. I FELT THEIR CHEMISTRY. THEY ARE PERFECT FOR ONE ANOTHER. LEXI IS A REALLY STRONG CHARACTER. WHEN SHE LEARNS THE TRUTH ABOUT WHO SHE REALLY IS, SHE ACCEPTS IT QUICKLY AND BEGINS TRAINING. I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH HOW IT ENDED THOUGH. THERE IS A CLIFFHANGER. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
