I was young and didn't hear all of the stories but what I could remember sounded awful.
While reading this story I felt like I was there with Joey it was so easy to follow, I felt like I took the beatings and I felt the yelling and screaming, it hurt.
Honestly it was difficult to read at times because I was angry that so many bad things happened to my mother and my uncle all by someone they loved so much their mom my grandma.
Now that I'm grown raising 3 babies of my own with a lot of similar ups and downs but I couldn't possibly imagine EVER treating my babies the way Toot's and Joey were treated. In a million years.
I love this book it helped me to be a better person and mother and I have recommended it to so many other's because I feel that whatever your going through there is something relatable in this book. There is a lesson in this book for everyone.
I like that the story shows that no matter how tough things are in life we can always rise above and beyond better than what know. You don't have to let the cycle repeat you can be different and make a difference. I can't wait for the sequel.
Those who have experienced similar or other hardships can gain encouragement from Joey's examples. This book shows that the bad cards that we feel we were dealt in life do not have to be our excuse to give up or hold on to unforgiveness. There is no other way to explain it. God can help you grow and heal through the help of the Holy Spirit and with the example of Christ. The saying is true, "It is not about how you start but how you finish."
