This is one of my favorite mystery thriller series and I hope there are more books in this series, especially after that little Easter egg that was dropped in there. I love all the female characters in this book and how they rock every case.
For those who aren’t familiar with the book series, this series revolves around Bridget Bishop, who is a criminal psychologist. She has worked in a private practice and for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). With each case, she works with a team of task force members at the local and/or federal level. Some of these task force members are recurring secondary characters in the series as well as in other books the author’s backlist. I might be wrong, but I believe Bridget and Vic met each other in Her Darkest Night, a Veronica Lee series book. That is when the sparks seemed to fly between them and we get a snippet of his past. Now in this book, we are exploring more of Deputy Vic Santino’s painful past and the reason he can’t move on with his life- knowing that his wife’s killer was still out in the world.
When Evil Calls follows up after the book, Road to Evil, where Bridget made the decision to go back to the BAU and to actively work on stopping evil that walks among them and to help change lives as well as save them. She wanted to make a difference and in her line of work at the BAU, she believed that she could do that better than in private practice. Also, the news of Chase Grafton’s new topic of his next podcast is personal as it involves her boyfriend and fellow task force member, Deputy Marshall Vic Santino.
Eight years ago, Deputy Marshall Vic Santino found his pregnant wife dead in their home and he spent months trying to solve her case only to be roadblocked and left without answers. He finally found a way to partially move on with his life, but when news of the local podcast’s topic has forced him to relive the painful memories and he wants to be involved in investigating the cold case. Hoping that with the help of the task force they can catch the killer and put all the bad memories to rest.
There is a lot in this book that goes on and it seems like all the pieces are random and don’t seem to fit, but trust me everything comes to light and it all makes sense. It always amazes me how the author can write this intricate and detailed book with all these pieces and side stories and make it all come together so flawlessly. It’s one of the reasons why she is one of my favorite mystery thriller authors. Can’t wait to read what she writes next and fingers crossed it another Bridget Bishop book. Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good twisted mystery to get lost in!!!
10 years ago 3 girls were murdered, each body left with an unusual signature. One of them was Deputy Marshall Vic Santino's wife – but the killer was never found. Now, another woman has died and the killer has left the same signature on the body. Bridget Bishop is conducting the current investigation, but her being in a relationship with Santino is not helping. What’s more, it looks like the murderer isn’t done just yet…
This was a good police procedural, fast paced, twisty, with an interesting and multi-layered motive for the murders. We don’t get to know the full depth of the motive until almost the very end of the book.
However, I’ve found the novel a little bit too dry. I think that with the type of motive, I was expecting the narration to have more of a creepy feel. I guess I was missing more mood, perhaps spookier descriptions. This would have helped with making the killer scarier.
I also didn't quite understand the investigators’ attitude to the podcaster, but that might be due to the fact that this is a 5th instalment in the Bridget Bishop series and I had not read the first 4.
On a side note, I am growing quite tired of podcasters in thrillers. This is a 3rd thriller I’ve read in the last couple of months where a podcaster plays a prominent role and I think I got to the point where my eyes go into a default roll at the very sight of the word “podcast.”
All in all, I certainly would recommend this book to the fans of police procedural thrillers!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really like this series, we have an intriguing cast and the support characters that feature in each book compliment the core cast well.
It is heartbreaking for Vic having to work through the past failure of an investigation, but it hopefully will allow the wound to finally heal, something which he really needs.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
