When Good Holidays Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend Paperback – August 3, 2012
|New from||Used from|
'When Good Holidays Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend" is like Goosebumps after an all-night bender. It's a good-natured parody of scary monsters of yesteryear with the humorous sensibility of an 'Airplane' movie. It's like Monty Python ate R.L. Stine and then wrote a book."Bowie V. Ibarra, author of the 'Down the Road' zombie horror series
Michael Dick has a winner here on his twisted ride into the imaginary world, where our favorite holiday characters are brought to life. His debut novella, WHEN GOOD HOLIDAY'S GO BAD: RISE OF THE FIEND, has all you want in a great, engaging story. Action, suspense, and yes, humor too. An amazing journey full of fantasy and horror, combined.

About the Author
Michael C. Dick was born in Buffalo, New York and raised on a steady diet of Comic Books, Abbott and Costello, SCTV, Monty Python, Airplane, Student Bodies and the lesser known Saturday the 14th and, of course, chicken wings - lots and lots of chicken wings.
A career as an Illustrator and designer led him out of the frozen north and into the unfamiliar, blistering heat of Northern Virginia were he currently resides with his wife, daughter and son. A short time after the move Michael made a career change and in his new occupation found ample time to start the outline of the first of many short stories. During this period, Michael submitted several pieces of art work to David Moody's website, lastof theliving.net. The website was dedicated to the re-launch of David's zombie book series, Autumn. Michael's meeting with the famed English horror author spurred him on after he received advice, praise and, much more importantly, encouragement from David Moody himself.
Michael's stories have been published in several anthologies by an assortment of publishers. His first full length book, When Good Holidays Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend is currently available for purchase and published by Knightwatch Press. This book has a little of everything monsters, humor, horror, and everything in between. It's fast and fun. The character's are known but brought into the modern age. The witty banter and the down right evilness of some of the characters makes the book work. There are a few really shocking and cool finds. Michael created balance and pace that kept the story going. The returning theme that keep popping in my head was Tim Burton (of Nightmare Before Christmas) would have a ball doing this as an animated movie. INSTANT CLASSIC!
now i know what you are thinking. "how can i trust that guy. he's a friend of the author so of course he'll say the book is superduper to promote it."
thats not the case, i'm a honest person. i don't fiddle around, i tell people straight away what i think. so, if mike wrote something that sucked, i told him, no matter what.
the reason i give "rise of the firend" 5 stars is not that i know mike and appreciate him as a person. its also not because mike mentioned me on the acknowledgements page in the book, which of course makes me feel mighty important!
the reason for me to love "rise of the fiend" above all is: IT MADE ME LAUGH! and that, believe me, is not a easy mission to accomplish!
i love the verve it is written with, the wit, the sense of tongue in cheek irony thats underlying his style. one instantly comes to like his characters and wants to know what happens to them next (and believe me, that are some hillarious things happening here). the story constantly pulls you allong with it.
this book is what happens, when a vivid imagination is frolicking through halloween-land doing crazy things!
the only negative thing i have to say about the book is that i didn't get no signed copy. mr. michael was to lazy to deliver it. he easily could have saddled his broomstick and fly the 5000 miles distance in no time, but nooo, "gotta write more...ideas...write...havoc and weirdness...write" he mumbled and off he went into his dark, damp lair.
