Lungisisa Indlela Village aka LIV is located in Durban, the heart of the Zulu kingdom, on the east coast of South Africa. LIV is now home to abandoned children who are given hope, love, food, education and the message of Jesus' saving grace. This village is self-sustaining and trains the children in varying skills.
How did this village come to be? Who had the vision? The beginning of this book tells the individual stories of Tich and Joan Smith. Like they say at the end of the book, if God can use them, God can use anyone as long as they are willing.
Born in South Africa, sports was the god of Tich's home. With a first name of Anthony, the name Tich came about due to his being so small but still possessing a lot of sporting talent. Tich also got the taste of gambling (horse races) at an early age. Rugby was his forte until a knee injury occurred. He then turned to his second love, cricket. At the top "the fame and lifestyle was intoxicating". Even after marrying and two children coming along Tich admits that his life "continued to be consumed with sport, gambling, partying and drinking". With his marriage destroyed, debt piled high, a talk with a fellow cricketer led him to the Lord. With no real guidance Tich's life actually got worse! What prevented him from committing suicide?
Joan, also born in South Africa, was the youngest of three girls. Jesus was only ever heard as a swear word. Hailing from another sport oriented family, this time the sport was golf. Growing up during Apartheid, segregation was all she knew and it was completely normal to Joan. She married a professional golfer. Who was the first to get saved in their family and why? What happened when Joan was 40 leaving her to bring up two teenagers by herself? Two tattered lives. How did Tich and Joan meet? Was it happily wedded bliss?
Part 2 of the book starts at approximately 25%. How did this ministry start reaching out to the caddies on the golf course? Then along came the vision given to Tich. He thought it was crazy and when he shared it with Joan she though the same. 12 years was to pass. In the meantime Joan started going to Amaoti, leaving their comfortable beach front house and heading to abstract poverty. How did that ministry grow? Was it easy? How did they handle the mistrust from the community?
12 years after the initial vision, God made it clear it was time to start. How was it going to happen? How would they find the exact land that Tich had a picture of in his mind? What about funding? Logistics? Be truly inspired as you read this INCREDIBLE and INSPIRING story of a couple who at times followed the Lord blindly but obediently. They have seen God open doors beyond anything they could ever have thought of. As they say at the end, "If you've read this story and think, "I could never do that" then we've failed". Allow their story to challenge you into asking God what He wants you to do. "Say yes to God and know that as you give him your heart he is able to do more than you ask or dare to imagine. God uses those who say, "Yes, lord, send me." "
I can't say enough about this book. Get it today and start reading. It has definitely inspired and challenged me! I purchased this at the listed price. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
