Editorial Reviews
Review
"Written by Catherine Stier, who is a cancer survivor herself, and with some lovely illustrations by Angel Chang, When a Kid Like Me Fights Cancer provides a way in which the entire family can speak about cancer together...Stier writes in a way that engages and her style of language and simple sentences can help children understand a complex and heavy topic." - The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health
"Hits a comforting note in the final item the protagonist learns: 'I am not fighting alone.' Targeted and right on target." - Kirkus Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2023After finding out yesterday that a student was just diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, three days before the school year begins, I immediately did research to find a book(s) to help explain it to my class. When I stumbled across this one, I knew I had to immediately buy it. I ordered two copies, one for this student and one for my class. They arrived today and I could not be more pleased with how well this book is written.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2020My five year old son went through cancer last year and I needed a book like this one to explain what was happening to him. Even though he’s now done with treatment, I still bought the book when it came out, and I’ve found it to be the very best one on the market. (Trust me, I bought five others in an attempt to find the right one!) This book is age appropriate, fun, not scary, hopeful and yet full of helpful advice for kids and parents. Without a doubt, this is the book every cancer fighting kid should be handed within days of a diagnosis. Hoping this book gets translated to other languages and widely dispersed at hospitals...it’s a winner. And if you’re reading this with a newly diagnosed cancer fighting kid: you can do this!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2023My 3 year old grandson is fighting stage IV cancer right now. I purchased this book for him, to help him understand things and to keep fighting. Thanks for having such wonderful books available to help us all through the days ahead.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2020Our 3 1/2 year old is going through chemo and we were looking for books to help normalize it for her and our 5yr old. This book was everything I hoped for and more. I loved how it acknowledged that cancer can be scary and make people sad but also had a positive, encouraging message that you're not the only kid going through it and that you have so much support around you. I think kids being able to identify with characters in books that are going through what they are going through is so powerful. This was relatable on so many levels and I cannot say thank you enough for writing this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2023I never thought that I will need a book like this. It’s a great thing that there’s a book like this. I hope this will be readily available in our country.
Good thing there’s Amazon.

NicoleReviewed in Canada on March 18, 20245.0 out of 5 stars The best childhood cancer book
I absolutely love the way this book is written, my son was diagnosed with cancer when he was 3 and I searched for books to read to him. My son school picked this book to read to his class on childhood cancer day last month. I am really hoping to gift some of these books to families in the oncology ward at our local hospital.
