I love the way Haley Cass writes. This is the ultimate friends to lovers but with all the angst of falling in love with your straight best friend. I desperately wanted them to get together. The slow burn. The ache of unrequited love. My heart is still feeling it and they have a happy ending but the way it felt to get there... exquisite torture. I loved every second of it and I could not put this book down. I was supposed to go grocery shopping - didn't happen. Thanksgiving is 3 days away and I don't even care. This book is available on Kindle Unlimited but I am going to buy it because I would like Haley to keep writing books so I have the incredible pleasure and joy to read them.

With just two books and a novella, for my money, Haley Cass is already among the top in the genre. She can spin a lovely story I simply can't put down. I appreciate how the difficulties that keep her characters apart and drive the tension feel realistic and not overly contrived as is found in so many books. And I love that she can throw out a sentence like this once in a while too: "And because Hannah is so very much like a sunset - with all of the layers that make her who she is, every single one of them different and absolutely beautiful, but sometimes concealing what else is in the sky - Caroline can't quite read all of the emotions under that vulnerability."

In a year where happy ending stories are so needed, Ms. Cass's books have shifted from my "to read" list to my "to read immediately when published" list. She has a way of dropping the reader into the middle of a character's life and then weaves the remaining tale with such great "visual words" to keep the reader along for the ride. I am hooked and want to continue to know what happens to the characters beyond the end of this book. Thus, I hope we get another "Epilogue" novella akin to "Forever and a Day" that Ms. Cass wrote after "Those Who Wait."
Brava, keep writing Ms. Cass. I, for one (and likely one of many), will keep reading.

A holiday romance that delivers!

I loved this! It reminded me a bit of All That Matters by Susan X Meagher in that it was about a friendship that began as part of a professional acquaintance that blossomed into more, but without the loving husband in the mix. Thank goodness for that! This was a really lovely holiday novel. Exactly what I was looking for. It delivered in a big way with a super slow burn toaster oven romance, gorgeous upstanding main characters, a completely lovable precocious and perceptive kid and a story that was good enough to make me want to read it all in one sitting. Just an overall feel-good read. When I finished it I thought, "Now why couldn't a story like this be made into a holiday film for lesbians instead of something like Happiest Season??" It would have been so much more enjoyable. This was my first Haley Cass read and I look forward to reading her debut novel soon.

I swear, Haley Cass, does not disappoint. Her books just get better and better.
I don't even think I was three paragraphs in, when I realized how hooked I was.
The development between Caroline and Hannah's relationship is absolute perfection. Without question, I want more...no...I need more.
Just wow! I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.

This flew to my top 5 for this year. I even delayed reading the last chapter because I just didn’t want the story to end.
This is a friends-to-lovers, toaster oven, slowwww burn romance. Haley Cass does them all so well. I haven’t read ‘Those Who Wait’ so I can’t compare them, but I am now very excited to read that one as well.
Caroline is a divorce attorney who runs into her ex-nemesis’s wife, Hannah, while getting coffee one day. Hannah asks Caroline to take her divorce case and the rest is history. I’ve read different reviews for ‘When You Least Expect It’ and some say there’s no angst, while others say it’s full of angst. I’m more in the middle. To me, there comes some built in angst of falling in love with your straight friend when you know there’s absolutely no chance of your feelings being reciprocated; and you also know there’s nothing you can do to stop your feelings or keep yourself from falling.
This is told over the span of a year and I loved that Cass really builds the friendship up before she gets to the romance. Some may be disappointed because you don’t really see them as an actual couple all that much. But I didn’t mind at all. Watching their friendship develop and watching it develop into more was perfect for me. I know exactly how they are together, because honestly, they were a couple long before either one realized it.
Highly recommend this for any romance fan.

I love the characters, developed well enough and generally likable, except, of course, for the mean guys (read the blurb). For me, the only real flaw is the absence of an epilogue. What the hell happened to these people! Some good sex, but it took forever to get to that point. By the end of a chapter I would feel frustrated for the MC, but the beginning of the next chapter would be so well written, introducing a new event, that I forget my angst until the end of that chapter. Has an HEA, but I would love another read with these characters.

I was in the minority of ppl who didn't like this author's first book, I admit. But the summery for this one sparked my curiosity and I don't like to give up on authors based on one book so I said why not and bought "when you least expect it". And oh boy do I have no regrets whatsoever. It was such a cute story with amazing characters and, what I loved the most about it, there wasn't any overblown drama that so many romance books rely on to create a conflict late in the book. Caroline and Hannah both had issues and they both stumbled but it was a realistic progression of a relationship. A good editor is still required but the mistakes didn't get in the way of me enjoying the story that much.
