5 out of 5 stars
The story When Love Walks (Book 2 of 2) by Kate Squires is a contemporary romance. At the start of this book, we find Elora and Logan happily in love and ready to take on new responsibilities. Elora as a nurse at a local hospital and Logan starts on the job training to become a physical therapist. After a while, things start to change between this couple and both seem to be drifting apart. They have been through so much together, will their relationship fall apart because of differences of opinion or will they find a way to look past their disagreements?
I found this an amazing follow up to the book When Love Breaks. The story is heartbreaking at times as Logan and Elora seem so right for each other and have overcome so much just to be together. Elora is excited to be hired at her new job and even though it is exhausting work she feels a sense of accomplishment with each patient that she helps. She gets high praise from a doctor there and he even wants her to work in his department. This causes a rift to form between Elora and Logan. Feelings are hurt and words said in anger. Will Elora keep her love for Logan alive or will this couple break apart?
Logan is also excited to be well on his way to becoming a physical therapist. This excitement is tempered when self-doubt starts to creep in when he feels that a doctor is paying an unusual amount of attention to Elora. Jealousy starts to form and grows until their relationship becomes almost unbearable. Will their love survive? Both Elora and Logan look to their friends and family for to help them with their situation, however sometimes the advice that they get is not always helpful or it is ignored by both of them. Sometimes situations and people are not always what they seem to be. This is a wonderful book and series. It shows both sides of a relationship, both the ups and downs. To completely understand everything has is happening in this book it is highly recommended that you read the books in order. I love the author’s writing style and look forward to reading more of her work. I would suggest this book for a mature audience.
Elora and Logan are star crossed lovers who meet on terms unexplained. One of them doing a job the other needing a reality check. In the end they found love and worked out how to handle each other.
I was beyond thrilled to read WHEN LOVE WALKS by Kate Squires, the highly anticipated sequel to WHEN LOVE BREAKS! I fell HARD for Logan and Elora in that emotionally wrenching first story which celebrated the healing power of love.
First a brief recap of this duo’s torturous history: In that first book, Logan Turner and Elora Foster fell in love against all odds after she was hired as his home health aide to help him get back on his feet after he suffered a horrific accident which left him a double amputee below the knee. At first he was a grouchy, growly bear, angry at the world, unable to care for himself and unwilling to accept help from sweet Elora. However, she refused to give in—or let him give UP--and eventually penetrated his wall of darkness and gave him the courage to embrace his new normal and find joy in the world. And along the way they found each other!! After many trials and tribulations, the book ended on a hopeful note with them deeply in love.
Now, as WHEN LOVE WALKS opens, Logan has a new lease on life, is walking like a pro with his new prosthetics and going to school to launch a new career as a physical therapist. He and his beautiful Elora are basking in their love, are forging ahead with their relationship and have recently moved in together. They have much to celebrate including Elora's plum role as a pediatric nurse at Edwards Memorial Hospital arranged by Dr Jason Scott (aka Dr. Hot).
But trouble is brewing between this desperately in love couple because the handsome, “touchy feely” doc takes a very personal in Elora which gets Logan's back up, rouses his jealousy and consumes him with red-hot rage. Elora tries to shrug off her protective alpha boyfriend’s suspicions, which among other things causes roiling tension--and a heartbreaking rift-- between the lovebirds as a fiercely proud Logan’s long buried insecurities rise to the fore. Could there be validity to his concerns and will they be able to weather this new storm together… or will festering anger and mistrust cause fissures in their newfound love that can never be healed??
OH MY HEART!! This gorgeously penned book gutted me. One thing Kate Squires excels at is emotionally-charged angst and HOLY MOLY... she certainly did not hold back in this book!! This sequel is brimming with heartbreaking tension, intense feels and powerful, raw emotion. I felt every tear, every plaintive sigh, every moment of sorrow down to my morrow.
I was immediately sucked back into the lives of these characters as if no time had passed. Ms. Squires definitely turned up the heat in this breathtaking romance! The chemistry between this couple is ELECTRIFYING and I felt the sizzle throughout. And man oh did I love Logan!! He just owned my heart with his strength, courage, fierce devotion and potent, rugged masculinity!! He was a man who pulled himself out from the depth of despair, with the help of his beautiful angel of mercy, and I love how he fought tooth and nail for his woman when he felt that “Dr. McFeely” was trying to steal HIS girl. There is just nothing hotter for me then an alpha male who fights for his woman!
Granted, Logan was far from perfect--and I appreciated how humanly flawed he was and it struck a chord in me how his deep-seated feelings of unworthiness because of his physical handicap made him lash out and do and say regrettable things. Like Elora, my heart BROKE for the man who was her world but who couldn’t quite see it for himself. And this heroine was truly a woman deserving of this man’s FEROCIOUS, all consuming love. She has such a beautiful, kind and compassionate heart, although sometime she is a tad too trusting and naive for her own good.
I enjoyed reading this book very much, but I do not think the plotline is quite as strong as it was in the first installment. To be perfectly honest, I have mixed feelings about how the drama unfolded in the second half of the book. As the story opened and we bore witness this couple basking in their love, I rejoiced in all this duo has achieved, how far they have come amid unspeakable adversity. There were many flirty, playful and sweet, sigh worthy moments in the first part, and I never doubted for a moment that this couple adored each other and were destined to be together. But in the midst of all that I was kind of on pins and needles thinking “Hmmmm Elora and Logan are so happy, perhaps TOO happy"...and then BAM!!!! Their happy, glowy bubble bursts!! And my feelings of happiness and euphoria morphed into shock, heartache and swelling despair.
While I am all for angst and putting your characters through their paces, I felt it was drama OD in parts!! The plot kind of fell apart for me right at the 50 percent mark and my biggest gripe is that rather than communicating and trying to work out their problems together, like in WHEN LOVE BREAKS, they allowed outside forces to drive them apart and there was so much external melodrama I got whiplash!!
There was such good underlying conflict throughout and I just wish the author had focused more on the organic issues—i.e. their attempts to navigate their challenge-laden relationship and the uphill battles Logan faced as he tried to forge his paths in the world amidst his physical limitations --rather than allowing external strife to drive much of the story. Due to all this outside interference, I found myself just growing incredibly frustrated with this couple…Elora’s unwillingness to give Logan the benefit of the doubt or listen to his concerns, which as a result incited his volatile outbursts and jealous rages, really kind of put a damper on the once tender-hearted romance for me.
That said, I was INCREDIBLY invested in this couple from start to finish and despite my frustrations, I clung to the hope that after all they’d been through to be together they would find a way to heal their rift.
And Ms. Squire certainly delivered on that front! The climactic ending was extremely dramatic and palpable, bringing their story arcs full circle in BEAUTIFUL and PROFOUND ways. Although I did think the reunion was a tad rushed—I wanted more of an emotional coming together after all the heartache they had been through---ultimately the HEA was breathtakingly romantic and I found myself blinking back tears of unabashed joy!
In closing, I feel blessed to have embarked on this touching, two-part journey with this incredibly special couple. Kate Squires is a phenomenal writer who hits you right in the FEELS and I look forward to many more books from her!!
