When the Moon Hatched (The Moonfall Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 41,613 ratings

The Creators did not expect their beloved dragons to sail skyward upon their end. To curl into balls just beyond gravity’s grip, littering the sky with tombstones. With moons.

They certainly did not expect them to fall.

As a valued Elding Blade of the rebellion group
Fíur du Ath, Raeve’s job is to kill. To complete orders and never get caught.
When a renowned bounty hunter is employed by The Crown to capture a member of the Ath, Raeve’s world is turned upside down. Blood spills, hearts break, and Raeve finds herself at the mercy of the Guild of Nobles—a group of dual-beaded elementals who intend to turn her into a political statement.
Only death will set her free.

Crushed beneath a mourning weight, Kaan Vaegor took the head of a king and donned his melted crown. Now on a tireless quest to assuage the never-ebbing ache in his chest, his hunt for a moonshard lures him into the belly of Gore’s notorious prison where he stumbles upon something that rips apart his perception of reality.
A shackled miracle with eyes full of rage and blood on her hands.

The echo of the past sings louder than the Creators themselves, and even Raeve can’t ignore the truths blaring at her from a warmer, happier time.
However.
There’s more to this song than meets the eye, and some truths …
They’re too poisonous to swallow.

When the Moon Hatched is a fast-paced fantasy romance for fans of witty banter and strong, sassy protagonists. Beneath the cover is an immersive, vibrant world with mysterious creatures, a unique magic system, and a love that blazes through the ages.

A beautifully designed book, dust jacket has visible wear on top edges
I haven't started reading WTMH as yet, so this review is just of the physical book. Before you get to the first chapter, there's: - a title page, - an About page, - a Glossary, - three-and-a-half pages of Terms used in the book, - two pages of Creatures/Beings that exist in the Moonfall universe, - two pages of Characters appearing in the story, - a Pronunciation Guide, - a single-page map, - and the dedication (which features dragon illustrations on the top right and bottom left corners of the page) Each chapter begins with an illustration or drawing above the chapter number, except for the first one, which only contains an illustration at its beginning. The end of the book contains: - a Family Tree - a Thank You page - Acknowledgments - an announcement that the next book in the series will be available in Fall of 2025 - an About the Author page - and finally the list of Trigger Warnings The back endpapers feature the same design character/dragon illustration as the front endpapers. The book itself is plain black with silver lettering on the spine (book title, author, etc.). The front and back feature no exterior design. The only flaw (if it can be called that) on the book is this weird line down the bottom half of the fore-edge, while the top and bottom sprayed edges are fine. Aside from that, the dust jacket that came with my book is a bit taller than the book itself, so while the bottom of the book is flush with the bottom of the dust jacket, the top of the dust jacket extends past the top of the book by a few millimetres. The majority of damage/wear is on the top edge of the dust jacket that curves around the spine, as well as the top corners. The bottom edges are fine. It's a beautiful book and, despite the wear I mentioned above (which isn't significant enough imo for me to deduct a star), I'm really glad I got it. It's actually triggered a desire to add more sprayed-edge books to my collection now.

    I was hooked from the beginning. The world building, the pacing, the character introductions, the intrigue and the attention to detail was written so well.
    In my opinion this could be perceived as a confusing fantasy world, consider reading it when you are in the mood for something new with a more complex world in terms of story telling but overall I found it captivating.
    I loved the story. I found fascinating the concept of creators, dragons and all of the other magical creatures. The new magic system was engaging.
    I enjoyed reading the diary entries, slowly getting the pieces of the puzzle together.
    The chemistry and banter between Raeve and Kaan was delightful and the slow burn was perfectly written.

    Perfect if you are in the mood of something adventurous, dark, emotional, funny, mysterious, sad and dragons.

    4.5 ⭐️

    What a great book! If I had the time, I would go back to page one and read again, but I will reread closer to when book 2 is released.

    This book is a gripping fusion of fantasy and romance, delivering an intricate tale of love, power, and rediscovery. Set in a richly imagined world teetering on the brink of war, the novel introduces readers to an assassin with a mysterious past and a king burdened by grief, weaving their stories together with magic, dragons, and slow-burning romance.

    —World Building and Magic System

    The world building was fantastic and it is coupled with a unique magic system tied to elemental gods, where characters “sing” to their elements. This magical framework feels fresh, and Parker’s detailed descriptions make it easy to immerse oneself in the world. The addition of a glossary at the start of the book is a thoughtful touch, guiding readers through the complex lore without interrupting the narrative flow. Although, I didn’t feel the need to flip to the glossary. The narrative gave enough context to submerse yourself into the richly built world of new beasts and language.

    —Characters

    Raeve, the fierce and emotionally scarred FMC is a highlight. Her evolution throughout the story, as she grapples with her past and rediscovers herself, is both poignant and empowering. She is a layered character—moody, sassy, deadly and deeply loyal to those in need—making her a compelling protagonist.

    Kaan, the brooding MMC, defies initial impressions as a ruthless ruler. Beneath his hardened exterior lies a fiercely protective and soft-hearted man whose devotion to Raeve shines through. Their dynamic is electric, balancing angst with moments of vulnerability and humor. The slow-burn romance between them is well done, with sizzling tension and heartfelt moments that make the payoff immensely satisfying.

    The multiple POV narrative allows for insights to the varied side characters as well. I particularly enjoyed Veya, sister to Kaan, with her sharp tongue and never ending courage. These insights gave depth to the overall story, and each of the POVs enriched the narrative without overshadowing the central duo.

    —Plot and Themes

    The plot is engaging, blending elements of rebellion, political intrigue, and personal redemption. Themes of love, grief, revenge, and self-discovery are explored with nuance, giving the story emotional weight.

    Despite the (🔥) romance, the plot stands strong on its own, ensuring that the fantasy elements never feel secondary. The balance between gritty, brutal moments and tender, emotional beats is well-executed, making this a story that lingers long after the final page.

    Tropes:
    * Slow Burn
    * Enemies to Lovers
    * Forbidden Love
    * Who Hurt You?
    * He Falls First
    * Star-Crossed Lovers
    * Found Family
    * Revenge

    —Final Thoughts

    When the Moon Hatched is a captivating and intense journey, blending excellent worldbuilding with a sizzling romance. While the pacing could use a tad bit of refinement, the richly drawn characters, unique magic system, and emotional depth more than compensate. This is a must-read for fans of gritty, romantic fantasy—and one that begs for a reread to catch all the subtle clues.

    This book is an absolute masterpiece. I cannot even put into words the way I am enthralled by this story. It’s so rich and beautifully written, the characters are robust and layered with depth and intrigue. Rhysand, who?? Give me KAAN 😭Kaan is everything. He fights to be her partner and worships her. Submits to Raeve when needed and challenges her in turn. I’ll take your malmr any day, Kaan 😮‍💨😩
    Raeve is an absolute masterclass in how to bring a female alpha to life on page. She’s vicious, ruthless, fierce, and intelligent.
    The Fate Herder!!!! Kitty character for the win 😻 I need to go lay down and just let the adrenaline of that ending wreak havoc on my system for a bit and hope to sweet heaven that this doesn’t put me into a year long book slump.
    I’d give this book 10 stars if I could!!!

    This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

    The author created a world and magic system that is mostly unique and different from any other story I’ve read that includes Fae and dragons. All the different creatures, characters, locations, and magic is complex and a little confusing at first, but author includes a glossary for reference, which is helpful.

    This book is an adult epic/high fantasy story with dark elements. No YA, no teenage vibes, and no urban elements. Book has a well thought out, unique, complex, clever, well written plot and storyline told from multiple viewpoints.

    The characters are your typical attractive Fae with long life spans, but not immortal. Their ages are unclear, but they are definitely grown adults who’ve lived a long time. I only mention this, because I’m a middle aged mom who prefers older characters, lol.

    Story has a slow-burn romance between the morally grey fmc and broody mmc, and does have some on page sex scenes that complement the story without being gratuitous. Primary trigger warnings include: violence, blood/gore, torture and abuse (not between main characters), child abduction and abuse (off-page), and some explicit sexual content.

    I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. She has a very clever sense of humor that I appreciate, especially in a story that has a lot of dark elements. The writing is descriptive, but not over the top. The pacing was well-done. I didn’t find myself skimming over anything.

    The only thing I didn’t like was the fmc as an assassin. I feel like that’s a plot device that has been beat to death, and not one I particularly care for. I found her to be a little annoying at times. The way she’s constantly shoving her emotions down deep into her little frozen lake makes her come across as a little too sociopathic. And her connection with the mmc ultimately feels more physical than emotional. Maybe that’ll change in future books? I hope so.

    Also, I need to mention that whoever did the book editing was superb! I didn’t detect a single spelling or writing error anywhere throughout the story, which was very refreshing!

    Story ends with a cliffhanger! Ugh
