I found the book to be refreshingly frank and honest. An easy read; I read the book in one night. Ms. Alder shares her experiences and wisdom gained over 40 some years in ministry. I was able to empathize with her feelings of inadequancy and the weight of having to live up to other's expectations. Her vulnerability gives one permission to be honest about their own feelings and, at the same time, rejoice with her in God's grace and marvelous work in her life. Lay people will have a better understanding of both the joys and pains that a pastor's wife experiences and will be better equipped to minister to them and to be a support to them. This is a book of hope and encouragement both for the pastor's wife and the lay person alike.

Some of today's great pastors are women --- a fact this author realizes and appreciates. Meanwhile this particular book addresses situations in which the pastor is a male, and his female life partner assumes the unpaid but highly scrutinized role of "pastor's wife."

A pastor friend of ours, veteran of several churches and settings and cultures, interviewed for a new position. He was asked three questions, one of which was "Does your wife play the piano?" So scrutiny of a pastor's wife begins even before a pastor is hired.

This is an excellent, helpful, well-written book for wives whose husbands serve in ministry. The author weaves her own observations and experiences into a useful, relevant narrative that keeps you turning the pages.

There are not enough --- not NEARLY enough --- resources for pastors and partners. This book is a helpful step in the right direction. If you do a search for "clergy marriage" right here on Amazon you will find only a handful of specific, targeted resources --- most of which are two decades old --- or older.

Here's a new book which brings wise light to shadowed places. Many thanks to the author and also to the publisher of this helpful work.

Donna Bordelon Alder is a professor, and it shows in this book. Throughout the book she teaches ways for pastor's wives to overcome fear, depression, anxiety, etc. via simple yet effective methods. Lest anyone believe that such a book may be boring, there are many life stories and personal accounts that keep the reader's emotions and interest. Though I am not a pastor's wife (nor a woman for that matter), I found many helpful insights on how to improve my own life and look forward to applying them. I do not think anyone striving to become a better person will be disappointed in this book.
