The kind of tachycardia you feel when you suddenly hear a noise, and you even stop breathing to make sure it wasn't you, exactly that kind of panic is what Yardley uses to keep you awake and alert all along the tale.
I really didn't imagine what it's was about, I was expecting a kind of military attack, or even (another) zombie story... but no. Lou goes much beyond and plays with your fear of the unnatural and paranormal. You can't get in... you can't get out, every choice is worse than the last one, and the consequences, more demolishing.
"What could I do?" Is the main thought of our poor, lost, tired protagonist. When there's no way out, and you can only move forward blindly, with the only hope of not crashing with your own doom.
It's been a great surprise, I loved it —so much. I was stuck to the screen the whole time, if you start it you'll finish it. It's a very entertaining quick read and I highly recommend it.
