What I loved: The author does a fabulous job exploring the topic of bullying in high school and the horrific toll that occurs on the impressionable psyche of teenagers. Both Erin and Mason are more than what they believe themselves to be and it was great to see them helping each other grow in confidence in themselves, especially Erin’s character. The secondary characters are fantastic as they give Erin and Mason the support and at times comic relief they both needed throughout the story. I totally loved the characters, Grams and Monica, for they both simply and truly loved Erin and Mason and went out of their way to let them get ahead and stay ahead. And holy hell, Teagan’s character was so horrendously accurate! The author out did herself breathing life into that villainess. I seriously said Ah Yeah! when Erin dishes a little comeuppance to Teagan. Finally, I really loved the idea of what Erin and Mason do after high school. Yeah, you have to read the book to find that tidbit out.
What didn’t fully work for me: I felt in a few places they were a bit rushed and needed more, while others could have been shortened. For example, while I know she ultimately hid from Erin because she loved her, Monica’s plight was a little nebulous and dang it I just wanted Erin to find out earlier than she did. I also felt that some of Monica’s reactions to certain things were way tamer than what I would have expected from a mom. Also, some of the scenarios Erin and Mason experienced after graduation became a bit of a stretch and the phraseology didn’t really fit an American teenager or in an American setting. Finally, in my opinion, the story didn’t need two parts. The story broke apart at an awkward spot and would have been better served if the break would have occurred earlier in the story.
Would I read more from this author: Abso-positively-loutely! This was the author’s first foray into the YA contemporary world and it was brilliant. The author totally tuned in to the inner workings of the high school teenager and does a phenomenal job in expressing the feelings of said teenagers with great writing prowess. I look forward to seeing what she writes next!
High school is four years teens often fail to realize changes their lives inevitably, whether for the good or for the bad. Erin and Mason took both the good with the bad and came out ahead. This was a solid 4 star read for me.
P.S. Have tissues next to you.

No light reading, but so well written that the story refuses to let you go.
