Vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. Built to Spill returns with When the Wind Forgets Your Name, Doug Martsch's unbelievably great new album (and his eighth full-length)... with a fresh new label. When the Wind Forgets Your Name continues expanding the Built to Spill universe in new and exciting ways. In 2018 Martsch's good fortune and keen intuition brought him together with Brazilian lo-fi punk artist and producer Le Almeida, and his long-time collaborator, João Casaes, both of the psychedelic jazz rock band, Oruã. Martsch fell in love with their music the moment he heard it. So when he needed a new band for shows in Brazil, he asked them, and the partnership went so well Martsch, Almeida, and Casaes continued playing together throughout 2019, touring the US and Europe and ultimately recording the bass and drum tracks for When the Wind Forgets Your Name at Doug's rehearsal space in Boise. After Martsch tracked guitars and vocals, they group collaborated from afar to mix the album. What emerged is When the Wind Forgets Your Name, a complex and cohesive blend of the artists' distinct musical ideas. Alongside Built to Spill's poetic lyrics and themes, the experimentation and attention to detail produces an album full of unique, vivid, and timeless sounds, from guitar-driven rock odes to REM and Dinosaur Jr to bluesy '60s-style anthems to dub-reggae-inspired instrumentation. It may have taken us 30 years of obvious fandom and courtship, but Sub Pop Records is unabashedly proud to finally release an excellent new album from Built to Spill: When the Wind Forgets Your Name. Having been a fan of every record including and since ' There's Nothing Wrong With Love', I don't really differentiate between the different BTS albums. It's all continuous and it's all really high quality, thought-provoking music. This album is no great departure, quality-wise or stylistically, but is just another quality addition to a large and superior catalog. One of the best and most-underappreciated (from a mainstream perspective) rock groups. Thank you.

Can't comment on this particular vinyl copy yet, but the album itself is certainly in the top 5 records I've heard all year. It's fairly straightforward Built to Spill, simple at times, complex, rich, and beautiful - these songs and melodies give you the feelings you want. Warm and small/intimate production. That's all i can say.

I got into this not expecting much more (or less) than the last 3 albums, and i stand corrected. The front Part of the Album is a little misleading, as it Features short and, on the surface, simple Songs. But they are not simple, they are packed with Details and honestly genius playing of All 3 Musicans. Theres a fresh, playful vibe going on, and its different from every bts side you ever heard. But side b is where martsch totally gets you. He does it with his honesty, his heartfelt lyrics, and a killer 4 punch. Spiderweb is bts at its best, never alright is complex and rockig and beautiful, alright is PERFECT with lyrics that Made me shed tears, all the while shaking my head because how can modern music be so HONEST? The Coda to this Song Bowled me over when i thought it couldnt more. And comes a day will take many more spins to unravel. The bottom line: this is extremely rare, human music, a Kind of anomaly. It does what no other bts Album, and i adore PFNO and KILAS, did, because they are somehow too perfect, too removed: it Made me cry. And this is what Musical genius should aim for: to open our hearts. 5 STARS
