CriticalPraise for When a Spouse Loses A Parent:What to Say & What to Do

"Rodway and Madden's book When Your SpouseLoses a Parent: What to Say & What to Do is a thoughtful, useful addition to the literature on adult sons' and daughters' coping with thedeath of a mother or father.  Heretofore, books on the death of parentshaven't paid much attention to the challenges that spouses face.  Rodwayand Madden's book closes that gap.  Readers will find both general informationand specific insights for wives and husbands who are trying to work their waythrough this significant life event.  The authors provide an accessibleoverview of loss and bereavement; and they offer practicalsuggestions (in Q-and-A format) for helping spouses cope with the aftermathof loss.  The result will benefit many couples -- and, indeed, entirefamilies."
-Edward Myers
Author of When Parents Die: AGuide for Adults

The authors have written a highly readable and sensible guide for understanding grief and supporting a spouse through grief. They recognize that simple reassurance is not the way to go and adopt a more sophisticated relational approach. This book will be helpful for anyone dealing with grief personally or supporting others close to them.
- Dr. Alan Eppel,  Clinical Professor in Psychiatry, McMaster University
Author of Partners in Healing & Sweet Sorrow

[Rodway]/Madden's book provides a practical guide for supporting a grieving spouse. It covers important issues such as the stages of grief and answers commonly asked questions. A highly recommended resource for the bereaved, as well as for mental health professionals.

From the Author

My name is Irene Rodway. I watched my late husbandstruggle with the loss of his mother after a long fight with Alzheimer's andthen witnessed his grief when his dad died rather unexpectedly. Later, it wasmy turn to need support as I mourned the deaths of my mother after herprolonged illness and my father's sudden fatal heart attack.

In addition to these experiences, I have, as a mother, watched my children go through the heartbreak of losing their beloved fatherand their intense grief process. They were fortunate in that each of mychildren had someone to support them. This book was inspired by the examples Iwitnessed as my children grieved, fully supported by their loving partners.Humbly, I recognized that although there might be "no love stronger than amother's", partners support each other in a different, yet equally loving way.
