The descriptive snow and cold adds to the tension of the storyline and is so well done you’ll have to wear a sweater while reading! The characters are rich and well-developed, and the police procedural information is on point. The action and suspense is almost constant. A very entertaining and engrossing read!
While this series is okay, it keeps lacking development. It’s like the characters are stuck and not evolving. To state these books are stand alone is a stretch. Without reading the other books you would have no idea of the side conversations about the past. If you want a true stand alone series read Ellery Kane’s Doctors of Darkness series.
These books are like Lifetime movies, cheesy and not overly dramatic.
When young girls go missing and there is one who got away and made it to the town of Black Rock Falls. Sheriff Alton is home sick and Kane is trying to take care of her and we'll as healing from his head death experience from their last big case.
Apparently the killer is stopping motorists for help along a long blacktop stretch of highway in the middle of the night. He knows when certain women will be traveling that road by friending them on facebook.
Why he is collecting these specific victims is one I didn't think of. The sheriff and her deputies keep going in circles trying to figure it out.
I got so into this story that I dreamt I was one of the victims. It was a weird experience.
I have lived all of DO Hood's books in the series to date. Glad I found this great author.
The writing is reminiscent of play rather than a novel and the use of the same descriptors, description over and over is insipid. Make coffee, pour coffee, sip coffee, prepare coffee, pick up coffee, push a strand of hair behind her ear, chew on her lower lip, roll his shoulders.
All the characters, we find out, were connected in their past lives with special military training. The training fails completely as this is the most inept sherif’s department. It is truly amazing how much really expensive equipment a 6 deputy department. Helicopters fly in snowstorms, the ME is not a licensed MD but who can perform complicated forensic tests and he is also a techno whiz.
If you wonder why some mystery novels cost $2.99 and some cost $14.99, this series by DK Hood explains it all.

Still, I really enjoyed the continued development of the Kane and Alton partnership which had hit a bit of a rocky patch after Kane was shot at the end of book four. And I am looking forward to what comes next.
