As a person who was involved in the laboratory aspect of forensics I see the very basics of an investigation at the forensics level. Dr. Helpern was a detail man and that is what distinguishes the professional from the amateur. Such a quality is what kept Dr. Helpern not only constantly busy but also extremely popular. His detailed examinations of a corpse determined the huge difference between a natural death and a homocide thus the difference between an innocent person sentenced to prison vs going free.

Written not long after the Kennedy assassination (1967), the author starts out criticizing the way JFK's murder investigation was handled. There are other stories he describes about murder investigation forensics that are very interesting. It's not overly technical, but he is a doctor and gives technical descriptions about the cadavers that come his way, same thing you see on some TV shows today (like "Forensic Files"), but there is also dialog with police officers and others that make it read like a "true crime" book of short stories. It's an old book, but I managed to get a decent ex-library copy. Teaser: Chapter 13 is very interesting, nuff said.

Milton Halpern was an amazing man. He pioneered the field of forensic medicine. This book is an interesting insight into the world that he dwelled in. Great mind, great man, great book.
