First off, I'll admit I never heard Leadbelly's original version of this song.Kurt Cobain was a huge Leadbelly fan. I only heard the short sample available here on amazon.com.It's a great song about obsession, jealousy and Cobain adds maybe some rage with his vocals. He just puts everything he has into his performance of this song, especially near the end. If you listen carefully (and you can clearly see this if you have the DVD of this concert like I do) you can hear him sigh as he sings the last line of the song. That concert was filmed less than 5 months before Cobain ended his life; this was just a tremendous heartfelt ending to that great Unplugged performance by Nirvana.

Incredible, amazing, amusing, absolutely awesome performance! I feel it's special because it puts the viewer right up in front... up close and personal! You can see show they relate to each other and the crowd of fans --BEST PART: the Intensity in Kurt's (R.I.P) eyes and acoustic guitar playing! A "MUST HAVE"!!!
Seller sent it to me right on time and in perfect condition.

When I heard a recording of Leadbelly performing this song I was struck by the mournful feel of the shallow ballad...I found myself listening to it fairly often, liking it a bit more with each listening. When I heard Nirvana's version of this featured on MTV Unplugged I found that I was hearing the song as I felt it should have been sung...replicating a kind of pain that must have been felt as it was written. This version will haunt a listener for a long time, and more than likely become a favorite.

You can tell that the lyrics seem to touch him in a very personal way; the feeling that he puts in to this song gives me chills every time. Of all the versions, this one is my fav. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND

Mah girl, mah girl, don't lie to me... Tell me where did you sleep last night?

I hope this song is played on Courtney's funeral.

I firmly believe that Kurt performed this song because of extreme disgust to Courtney's hoe-traits.

better than the version of lead belly. Kurt's sadness and anguish towards his contemporaries and his rival Billy Corgan is greatly showed in this rendition.
