Commandos, posing as German soldiers, parachute into a city to rescue a supposed allied general from a Nazi hideaway fortress that can only be reached by cable car.
Scorned by reviewers when it came out, this concentrated dose of commando death-dealing to legions of Nazi machine-gun fodder has acquired a cult over the years. In 1968 Clint Eastwood was just getting used to the notion that he might be a world-class movie star; Richard Burton, whose image had been shaped equally by classical theater training and his headline-making romance with Elizabeth Taylor, was eager to try on the action ethos Eastwood was already nudging toward caricature. Alistair MacLean's novel The Guns of Navarone had inspired the film that started the '60s vogue for World War II military capers, so he was prevailed on to write the screenplay (his first). The central location, an impregnable Alpine stronghold locked in ice and snow, is surpassing cool, but the plot and action are ultra-mechanical, and the switcheroo gamesmanship of just who is the undercover double (triple?) agent on the mission becomes aggressively silly. --Richard T. Jameson

I have hoped that somehow, someone would finally release this movie with a GERMAN vocal track, and that is exactly what this Blu-ray version does. Not only that, but the video transfer is excellent and does not suffer at all from some of the strange "darkening" of scenes that are often noted in some older Blu-ray video transfers. The images are clean and rich, and the soundtrack is excellent also.
That one scene in the castle where the two SS officers (one is "Major" von Hapen, and the other is "Colonel" Kramer) go at each other because of the growing intrigue surrounding the capture and upcoming interrogation of U. S. General Carnaby is absolutely PRICELESS in the German language (which I understand and speak). I hope you enjoy it, too. I only waited over 40 years for this film to be released in the U. S. with foreign languages, and now it's here! If this is what you want, be certain that you get this one version -- do not confuse it with others or you'll be disappointed....
I fell in love with this movie many years ago when I was a kid. I was always hoping it would be on TV again.
Put this DVD into the Christmas stockings every year.
No plot spoilers from me; the story follows a group of Allied commandos on a raid deep in German territory. There are many misfortunes that befall the team as they seek to carry out their critical mission. In addition, the shooting locations and winter scenery adds great realism to the overall story.
This is a very exciting action movie, Highly Recommended!
