Our forests seem to be hiding something much more complex than an undiscovered gorilla. Bigfoot may be howling from a lonely mountaintop, but the bigfoot phenomenon is whispering secrets... if we will only listen.

Eyewitnesses, investigators, and cryptozoologists worldwide contend ample evidence exists supporting the survival of large, hairy, apelike creatures alongside mankind today, lurking in the wilderness. By all appearances, these beings seem wholly natural, interacting with their surroundings and leaving behind hair, blood, droppings, and, of course, footprints.

Yet despite their apparently physical nature, bigfoot and its hairy hominid kin consistently appear mired in High Strangeness—the peculiar, ineffable, and nonsensical absurdities so often encountered in paranormal phenomena. Some sightings seem more consistent with mythology than biology. Bigfoot often present supernatual attributes, like luminescent eyes or the ability to pass, ghostlike, through structures. Anomalous lights are regulalry seen in areas of frequent sasquatch activity. Footprints persistently, if rarely, display odd numbered toes, and—most bafflingly—bigfoot trackways suddenly terminate in the middle of open, untouched terrain.

In Volume 1 of Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomenon, authors Joshua Cutchin and Timothy Renner carefully examine not only the intersection of hairy apemen with global folklore—of poltergeists, faeries, extraterrestrials, magic, witches, ghosts, and archetypal women-in-white—but also question the fundamental assumptions underlying contemporary cryptozoological beliefs surrounding bigfoot.

"Impressively, even exhaustively researched, Where the Footprints End should give all students of the anomalous serious pause for thought. By documenting both the high strangeness that surrounds Bigfoot sightings, and the deep folklore in which they are embedded, Cutchin and Renner so far broaden the context of Bigfoot encounters that it is no longer possible to credit any single theory or literalistic interpretation concerning their nature. Indeed, we begin to suspect that the reality of Bigfoot is less a problem to be solved than a mystery to dissolve our view of reality itself. Here at last is the book that dear old Bigfoot deserves."- Patrick Harpur, author of Daimonic Reality

"This book poses a danger to the foundations of cryptozoology. While mainstream Bigfoot investigators would have you believe that people around the world are merely encountering a lost ape, Cutchin and Renner dig into the details they've swept under the rug, excavating countless Bigfoot reports involving glowing orbs, telepathic communication, and paranormal phenomena that have more in common with tales of ancient gods and alien abductions than they do with primatology. Meticulously researched and backed up with a treasure trove of footnotes, Where the Footprints End is poised to do for Bigfoot what Passport to Magonia did for UFOs."- Greg Newkirk, Director of The Traveling Museum of the Paranormal and the Occult & Executive Producer / star of Hellier

The thing that first jumped out at me about this book is how well it is written. Anyone who reads books in this genre has probably found many of them to be poorly written or edited as a result of self publishing, even if the content is interesting. I hadn't even realized how much this bothered me in the past, but in the light of how poorly even mainstream news articles are written now, the fact that this book is written so well is refreshing.
The content is thoroughly researched, the reference section for any quoted books, articles, or other media is extensive, and the sources used extend from books and newspaper articles from the 1800's to content from the last year or two. With as much groundwork as the authors have put into this book, its impossible to not at least conclude that they have a point, even if you are a skeptic, and I would recommend this book to anyone who has interest in folklore even if the main subject matter (UFOs and Bigfoot) is not something a reader believes in. The comparisons from modern stories to ancient fairy lore and Native American beliefs is impossible to ignore.
I can't wait for volume 2.

This book will make you think to reason all the data that these men have compartmentalized concerning the sasquatch enigma. When you look at all the information it is OBVIOUS that the BIGFOOT/SASQUATCH phenomena coalesces with the OCCULT REALM, so anyone seeking an encounter with sasquatch must be ready to enter this realm that the authors make too real, meaning accurately real for anyone to come to a logical conclusion. I read the book and finally understood what the authors were saying all along. They don't make any conclusions but masterfully connect the dots to let the public know what is behind the phenomena as I have mentioned. You can't read this book and not conclude that BIGFOOT/SASQUATCH is one and the same with the OCCULT realm which is connected and of the same essence and nature as, UFO, ALIENS, OUIJA BOARDS, FAIRYS, ORBS, CRYPTIDS, GHOSTS, WITCHCRAFT, ETC. The bible warns about the dangers of entering this realm in Deuteronomy 18:- let the Christian reader understand. The book is a real eye opener to the wary learner who can see through the excellent examples, notes and experiences that make the book come alive to inform, educate, direct and continually warn the reader what the BIGFOOT mystery is all about. This is probably one of the best written books on the subject that anyone seeking the truth about the subject cannot help but seeing and realizing the truth of the subject matter with a desire to know more to be aware and share with others the truth. Thanks Joshua and Timothy for your MASTER PIECE, that is sure to A BIGFOOT CLASSIC with very little competition except from master researchers like Scott Carpenter who has been completely direct on the nature of bigfoot with DNA proof and hours of research and video clips to educate and warn the public. Thanks for your book, can't wait for VOL. 2-----------------------------------------------DESTINED TO BE ANOTHER CLASSIC AND MASTERPIECE ON THE SUBJECT, THUMBS UP!

I discovered this book as a listener of Renner's highly addictive podcast Strange Familiars. I was already a fan of the podcast, and familiar with Cutchin's work.

The authors have assembled an exhaustive and fascinating collection of global evidence, both modern and old, that presents a much wider scope of this phenomenon than we typically see in pop culture and even in more esoteric coverage. If you are a fan of John Keel's work (The Mothman Prophecies, for example), Jacques Vallee (Passport to Magonia), or a lover of folklore and faerie traditions, this book will not disappoint.

The extensive index and footnotes are appreciated- you will have plenty of new books to add to your reading list (Stan Gordon's Silent Invasion and Cutchin's A Trojan Feast are now at the top of mine). And I must commend Renner's beautiful & haunting illustrations throughout the chapters- they are reminiscent of the gorgeous books of the Victorian era.

I'm very glad I pre-ordered and will be doing so again when Volume II comes out. Cheers to a job well done!

I consider Where the Footprints End Vol 1 & 2 essential books for anyone interested in the Bigfoot phenomena. Well-written and thoroughly researched, I can easily say these volumes are my 2 favorite books on the subject as they examine ALL aspects of the phenomena and do not leave out the high strangeness that so often occurs but is usually ignored/dismissed simply because it doesn’t fit into someone’s idea of Bigfoot. Facts and ideas/theories are presented and your mind is left to examine the whole picture and form your own thoughts and opinions. Read both volumes with an open mind (they go hand in hand)...the Bigfoot phenomena may be a lot weirder than you think.

If you are at that place in researching Bigfoot, UFO's, or anything related and have started to understand there are correlations, and similarities then this is the book for you. It paints a very broad picture and overlaps some interesting details that are usually overlooked.

The underlying ideas this book presents more or less resonate with my own thoughts on Bigfoot, High Strangeness, and folklore. At the same time, the overall narrative and structure was a bit tedious to get through, and I felt like the authors were cherry-picking some of the folkloric aspects. Had to remove a full star because of how much Wes Germer is cited. After several hours of listening to his Sasquatch Chronicles podcast and hearing how he caters to the Left Behind, Nephilim, Everything Is The Devil crowd, I can’t take him seriously as a reliable source.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every word of this book is worth reading.
Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2021
This book should not be confused with its spiritual predecessor "Where the Sidewalk Ends," by the great Shel Silverstein. However, both evoke wonder and invite the mind to travel. Cutchin and Renner have written a compendium that should be front and centre of any PhD Comprehensive lit. review for research exploring- Bigfoot, witches (and witchcraft), UFOs, sleep paralysis, Indigenous storytelling, American and Western European folklore traditions, simulacra, hierophany, and the list goes on.

On the Radio Misterioso podcast, Cutchin and Renner have said their methodology was more arts-based, and this makes sense. Each chapter has an individual character, yet each chapter is referential to the entire body of work. This would be a multi-featured sculpture. A work of this magnitude can only be done by researchers who are intimately aware of how each and every part is connected. If the art comparison doesn't work for you, consider this--as I do--to be a study of the intersections of ecology and mind. Each chapter stands apart as an original scholarly review of the extant literature. In this case, however, the literature is composed of the trans-logical and polyphasic encounters men, women, and even animals have with the unknown (although I would have liked to have seen more exploration of children's experiences).

To their credit, Cutchin and Renner respect the accounts of the witnesses, and treat them as a phenomenologist would: something happened to these folks, and perhaps their encounters have some value to the reader. That's it. Ridicule and disbelief too often follow the stories people share, but the authors use the accounts as the foundation for wonder.

Yet another excellently researched, written and brilliantly illustrated book my Mr Renner. Really well worth reading if you have any interest at all in the Sasquatch phenomenon, or indeed any form of “high strangeness”!! I’d urge you to get the accompanying volume 2 also, which follows on from this first volume. I’d highly recommend “Don’t Look Behind You” by the same author - another excellent read by Timothy Renner.

Reviewed in Australia on December 7, 2020
Timothy is the wet to Joshua's dry but the pair do their mortal best to try to understand that the Bigfoot phenomenon is neither delusion nor the foolish notion of an ape in the woods. An easy read with some crucial concepts in coming to an understanding of the baseline of the paranormal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read for anyone interested in high strangeness.
Reviewed in Canada on August 22, 2020
This is a good research volume for anyone interested in high strangeness. The authors have collected reports, stories, and legends from all over the world and organised them accordingly. It opens your eyes (and/or mind) to the idea the bigfoot is not just an undiscovered ape. The similarities to faeries is interesting. Even more interesting is how cultures that likely had little to none contact with each other have very similar stories. If you are interested in high strangeness or bigfoot give this book a read. It also gives a lot of references to other books for other research. This book is a gateway into strangeness. I can't wait for Volume 2!

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2020
Excellent book. Well researched and fully referenced, this book is a breath of fresh air, showing the many similarities between bigfoot accounts and folklore, the paranormal and UFOs etc. In fact, this book does for bigfoot what Jacques Vallee did for UFOs. This book won't be for everybody, especially those already convinced that bigfoot is an as-yet undiscovered natural flesh-and-blood animal. However, it is intelligent, fresh and truly Fortean in its approach. I highly recommend it.
