Would I recommend this book to a friend? Yes, all three of them!
A young woman, 33, finds herself pregnant and back in her small hometown. She never had a relationship with her mother but she feels compelled to see her and let her know that she will be living in town for a while and that she is pregnant. Her mother is one uptight, stoic woman. It is easy to see why they never had a relationship. A week after arriving in town she has an appointment with her old doctor to be sure she is on track with her pregnancy and that all is well. She is shocked when instead of the old doctor her first love walks into the room. They had been in love since high school and they separated on very bad terms her first year of college.
He came from the wrong side of town, everyone thought that the rich girl was making a big mistake falling for him. However, he became the doctor he so wanted to be, he is back in town with his son his wife having died in a car wreck 2 years prior. They both realize they still have feelings for each other but that it was in the past and there has been too much water under the bridge. One thing, the baby's daddy, where is he? What is going on there? There is a lot of drama going on in this small town as everyone comes to terms with the past and looks toward the future.
I really enjoyed this story. It is so interesting and the romance is so touching. Of course there is a bad guy, the baby's father. Another bad guy was the bully at school. I really would have liked to have seen this kid get put away for some of the things he did. There was no resolution there! I always like to see the bad get it in the shorts but it didn't happen here. But, it is still a good story and I definitely recommend it. A great read.
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 7/12/17.
To recap, Maddie Adams went home, away from big city. Her beau, despite years of relationship, was not man enough to marry her when she got pregnant, quite by accident. She was surprised to see the man who broke her heart 16 years ago, Nick Ryan, is the doctor in town, trying to raise his 15-year-old son alone. Diane, whom Nick chose 16 years ago instead of Maddie, had died 2 years prior in an automobile crash, something Nick's son still blames him for. Nick had even expressed his desire to go back to the city, to get away from this place of sadness. Maddie cannot allow herself to rekindle the feelings to Nick because Nick destroyed her once, esp. when he may not even stay around, but she cannot deny they had a thing together. Nick grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and the only one who believed him was Maddie... But he screwed up and in order to do the right thing, he had to let Maddie go. But now that Maddie's back, he knew that this is his chance to build a family based on love, rather than obligation...
The family drama was intricate, with multiple roles and obligations binding each of the characters. Nick had to balance his role as doctor, as son (to his father, the reason he moved back), as husband (when Diane was alive), as father, and as ex-lover. Maddie had to balance her role as the dutiful daughter, the ex-lover of two men, and more. The only reason this didn't get 5/5 is I wish for more karma upon that irresponsible beau.
The story itself wasn't without it's up and down, but there was no real long drawn out angst too contend with either. This was also a very clean romance story, which I appreciate more and more these days. Can't wait to go check out her other books now......
