Vicki Schieber is a speaker, writer and ambassador for Catholic Mobilizing Network and the co-founder of Murder Victim's Families for Human Rights. As the mother of a murder victim, she is active in murder victim families support groups and a noted advocate for death penalty repeal. She is coeditor of Where Justice and Mercy Meet: Catholic Opposition to the Death Penalty (Liturgical Press, 2013).

Trudy D. Conway is professor emeritus at Mount St. Mary’s University. She is active in the Catholic campaign against the death penalty and contributes to the educational initiatives of the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty. She is coeditor of Where Justice and Mercy Meet: Catholic Opposition to the Death Penalty (Liturgical Press, 2013).

David Matzko McCarthy, PhD, is the Father Forker Professor of Catholic Social Teaching in the theology department at Mount St. Mary's University. He is the author of Death Penalty and Discipleship: A Formation Guide (Liturgical Press, 2016), coeditor of Where Justice and Mercy Meet: Catholic Opposition to the Death Penalty (Liturgical Press, 2013), and the founding editor of the Journal of Moral Theology.

Moving hearts and minds in the direction of life

This book looks at reasons for Catholic opposition to the death penalty from several different directions. As a person who once supported capital punishment but changed my view after hearing a presentation on reasons for Catholic opposition (in light of Catholic social teaching, particularly the importance of the "dignity of person"), I know that people's views can evolve and change. Hopefully, this book of 16 chapters looking at Catholic understanding of the death penalty will have some chapters that will resonate with a person reading the book.

I have heard the irrepressible Vicki Schieber (the editor of this work and a contributor) speak on this topic several times. Her story is remarkable, and illustrates that God touches hearts, even in and through great suffering. She and the other writers articulate the different positions quite well.

The book is good for personal study and for reading in a book club. The questions for discussion at the end of each chapter should be valuable to help people get to the heart of the matter.

I highly recommend this book and think I will propose it as a book for our Catholic parish book club to read. Since it is not ponderous in tone, it should accessible to most readers.

Calling for the abolishment of the DP is a scandal. The Catholic Church has always allowed for the state to have recourse to the DP as a matter a retributive justice. You cannot change Church teaching, because it is Truth. It is based on Sacred Scripture, Tradition and the teachings of popes and bishops down through the centuries -- no matter the personal opinions of JPII or Francis the Heretic. Sorry, thems the facts.
