I would have given this book five stars if it had included something from all fifty states, or at least had a mention of each state. It also tells the names of many cities, but doesn't say which state they are in. Sometimes, it says the name of the city, sometimes it gives the name of the state, and other times it just tells the name of the landmark.
At the end of the book, Robin says, "Momma, I have traveled this country, and it is so great! Now I am ready to see the world, I must set a date!" I think that children from the states that were not mentioned may be disappointed that their state was not included, or perhaps it should be prefaced that Robin was just visiting some landmarks and states of her choice. Surely there are landmarks or national parks that could have been included from each one. The states or cities that are mentioned include: Philadelphia, Washington DC, Outer Banks, Nashville, Florida Keys, New Orleans, Texas, Arizona, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Santa Monica, San Francisco, Sausalito, Seattle, Denver, Colorado, Yellowstone, Wyoming, Mount Rushmore, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, and Broadway. These were the main headings on each page.
Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book to review, but the opinions are my own.
As with many books who try to capture this big country, there are choices that need to be made to fit such an adventure in the confines of a picture book. These pages offer a decent overview of the USA and could be used as a fun introduction to a geography or history lesson with elementary school kids. My kids enjoyed following Robin's trail on the map as we read.
What made me hesitate about rating this book higher were the inconsistencies such as Robin visiting primarily specific cities like San Francisco and LA but then other times a whole state such as Colorado. I also found the choice to make the book's text rhyme more distracting that appealing.
However, that being said, we enjoyed Robin's adventure and there is much to be learned from this book.
