What makes this book stand out is how sensitively and realistically the author deals with the issues facing the characters -- the age gap, Michelle's self-esteem/confidence issues, her anxiety attacks, religious differences (Michelle is an observant Jew, while Will is Jewish by heritage, but he was not raised observant). The author could have easily made Michelle out to be a stereotypical "cougar" or the relationship a stereotypical May-December romance and that would have sold a lot of books. However, to her credit and to the benefit of the book, she made Michelle a flawed character trying to find herself and reclaim her life after a major setback. She also gave Will a lot of depth and a maturity that might not be expected of someone his age and fame. It was enjoyable to see how Will took steps to help Michelle rebuild her confidence, while also wanting to learn from her. Although Michelle does not really realize it until near the end of the story, she helped Will as much as he helped her.
While my review makes the book sound very serious, which it is at times, there are also lots of funny and lighthearted moments. Michelle and Will and the supporting cast are enjoyable characters to read about. The book is well worth reading.
I received a copy of the e-book from Reading Alley in exchange for a review
I loved the fact that it featured a role-reversal age gap. I’m so used to reading about the younger heroine and the older (sometimes by many years) hero. But I think Monica Epstein really grabbed onto something here. Sure, a lot of books feature a hero or heroine who has been through divorce, but for me there was just something different about this one. The fact that the protagonist in this book had been married for so long and doesn’t find it extremely impossible to move forward with her life is amazing. She manages to pack her bags and move to a whole other country. Though what lies ahead is completely to her, she goes ahead and does it. And along the way she meets and enjoys the company of one of her celebrity crushes. And hell if he’s as hot as he sounds in real life, who cares if he’s much younger? I sure wouldn’t.
I had a few moments where I laughed out loud, because the banter between the hero and heroine really managed to crack me up. The growth of both characters were well written and played out like it would it reality. The fact that the characters didn’t jump into a relationship really appealed to me. It was real and at times you weren’t sure if their relationship would progress further than friendship, but the end result was sweet and endearing.
The only thing that really bothered me was all the religion in the book. I get that Michelle is a Jew and needs to find a fitting place for her in her new community, but at times it would become overwhelming.
All in all, this book was endearing and charming and I do not regret reading it.
My issues with the book, I wish there were not so many different women’s names introduced in the story. I felt like I had to make a list/diagram of which women were Michelle’s friends and which were her co-workers. At 70% I was confused which group she was playing Mahjong with, etc. I understand that the author was trying to let the reader see that Michelle was making friends, but it became too much. Too much detail about the relationships with these people that I could have done without in the story. I felt like some parts of the book could have been eliminated altogether. There was a lot of detail. Not that I did not want to know Michelle’s likes and/or fears, but I think that a lot of that could have been edited. Some paragraphs could have easily been condensed to one paragraph or a simple sentence. It was just too much at that point.
I loved the title and I think it was perfect for this story. Will is such a great character. He never acted like a spoiled movie star. I loved that Michelle did not change herself to fit into Will’s “age” group. She had insecurities but I think they were understood. I am glad for the most part Michelle acted like a 44 year old woman, not a 44 year old woman trying to be 25. Yes, there is almost 19 year age difference between these two. I really thought I would have a problem with that. That is almost twice her age, but Will is just different. Will had to grow up quickly being in the movie industry. He is not looking for a “mother” figure since I think he had a very healthy and loving relationship with his parents. And I did understand his mother’s feelings and attitude, but it had me question would it bother me if I knew my son was happy?
