The most important thing to me when reading a book are the characters. Are they nuanced? Does the plot progression come from that character's motivation and perspective rather than a paint by numbers feel of how to write a book? Are they interesting? The answers to those questions is a resounding "yes" here. And, because of that, I was taken on a journey I didn't expect and deeply enjoyed.
Hale managed to create a completely unique scenario with two really strong and distinct leads with fantastic chemistry. Dylan is intense and a whirlwind of a young woman while Beth is more reserved, trying to pick the pieces of her life back together. They mesh splendidly. I've also never read a book about two tour guides of a historical murder home falling for each other before, have you?
The text was so fresh it lived and breathed. Everything about the book felt natural from the dialogue to the characters actions to the progression of their relationship. There was a perfect balance of sweetness, heat, dark, light, and suspense. In the words of the British when they let themselves indulge in a small extravagance, "Oh, lovely, lovely."
The cover of the book, which features a fountain, references something specifically but I think it does a disservice to capturing reader's interest. It doesn't allude to the wonderful characters and the standout love story that lurks beneath.
Loved it and recommend. 4.7 stars
