Editorial Reviews

The highly anticipated follow up to 2010's Greener Pastures finds Octaves honing their sound with a mix of heavy driving guitar riffs, intelligent lyrics, and a pull and push between vocals and music

It's really amazing. You fall out of listening to good music like this for years, then you start uncovering high-quality hardcore in 2013. There's so much to choose from, including much of TopShelfRecords' excellent catalog. Caravels' "Lacuna" is brooding, mysterious, excellent and infectious hard rock. Then you have the incredibly musical and experimental stylings of a band like La Dispute, whose "Wildfire" is already a modern classic released in 2011, chock full of surprises and a concept record, to boot.

Then you have Octaves, who have shared an early show with Caravels, and for good reason. This is bracing, eager, honest, engaging, electric creativity. Hardcore has a lot of good singers, even less GREAT singers, and Octave's impressive frontman holds court over provocative guitars and a phenomenal rhythm section that falls into step like an abacus. This is, in my opinion, one of maybe five hardcore bands to watch out for in the next five years. Which isn't to say that this release lacks something, or that it's a stepping stone to greatness (which seems to be the consensus among today's bloggers), but that Octaves have ARRIVED. They are here. Two releases to their name, two modern rock masterpieces that clock in too short for where they take you.

It's no problem though. That's why modern-day technology created the "repeat-all" option.
