Top Customer Reviews

By P. Swinburne on September 7, 2011
Format: Audio CD
I'd heard good things about Joshua Black Wilkins, but I was still surprised by just how impressive "While You Wait" is. This review may sound hyperbolic, but if you don't agree with me on your first listen, you will on your third or so. It's a well-balanced record: rootsy but fresh, accessible but not compromised, gritty but very human. It's countrified, but by real country, not radio country. It's Rock, but not without the Roll, and it's flavored with generous servings of Southern grit and junkyard noir. The writing is original and versatile- it's achingly personal but the feelings are universal. The production is tight and crisp, and free of the gratuitous gloss that mars so much contemporary music. Black Wilkins' voice and the deft instrumental accompaniment by the Forty Volts cut right through you and get straight to the point. This album has its tender love songs and its blues stompers, its honky tonkers and ballsy blistering rockers, and not a dud among them. And best of all, there are no gimmicks, bells, or whistles. In short, this what Rock would have sounded like in 2011 if it kept its soul. This is the direction that Rock & Roll deserved to go in.

Joshua Black Wilkins is one of the best songwriters of our time. He is inspired by people he knows and his life and it shows in his heartfelt lyrics. Raw and gritty at times his music is what I can best describe as satisfying. He tells a story. Moments and insight into his life. Well worth a listen. He tours extensively. Catch him if you get a chance.
