New Jersey. It was fascinating to learn about Greg's life leading up to his disappearance. Karen is such an interesting character, and it was intriguing to see Greg in this persona, after only hearing his wife's recollections of him in the book. A great twist at the end is always a great way to end a story!
I love Karen because I see many of the best parts of me in her. She is the hard worker, the responsible one, the unmarried daughter who her married-with-children brother assumes has no life. When Paula, her alcoholic mother, needs help, Karen always comes to the rescue until one day she grows a backbone and refuses.
Her chance meeting with Greg, as the result of a car accident, opens Karen's eyes. There is far more to life, she discovers, than playing the violin and bailing her mother out of trouble. For the first time, she finds love. She is over-the-moon happy until she is not.
I recommend this novella to everyone who enjoys a well-written love story, but to get the most from it, read Thought I Knew You first. Discover how well Kate Moretti develops the characters so artfully.
In WYWG, Karen is a sympathetic heroine who struggles to deal with an alcoholic mother, an unhelpful brother, and an ambivalent boyfriend. Not to mention, she has lost an important role in her symphony. Karen's life is wrought with stress and difficulty. But then she meets Greg and a romance blossoms. But although Greg makes Karen happy, he's not all that forthcoming about his life. When Karen discovers Greg's secret, she must confront the trajectory of her own life.
Moretti is a strong writer. Her words flow with such ease that you effortlessly get lost in the story. Her characters are deep and complex -- they are not perfect people and I love them all the more for it. I root for Karen on every page and I feel her sorrow, pain, and joy. I love to dissect Moretti's characters and world. She's truly a standout in her genre.
Karen Caughee is a woman we can all relate to. Everything's falling apart. Her job as a violinist with the Toronto orchestra, her mother is a long term alcoholic, her life is a wreck and going downhill. Then it gets worse...then she meets Greg, then there are lies and cover ups, and the twists and mystery elements come along.
It's a short read, perfect with coffee on a Saturday afternoon.
Kate has a wonderful way with words. Her characters are very believable. Recommended this to friends who read her first book.
