Drew Barrymore makes her bow as a director with this Roller Derby coming-of-age number, which shares the spirit of so many of Barrymore's movies: it's loosey-goosey, cheerful, and buoyant in waving its "Girls Rule!" flag. On screen, Barrymore relegates herself to a slapstick supporting role, handing the lead to Juno gal Ellen Page. Page plays a Texas teen with a yen to join Austin's Roller Derby squad, complete with new professional moniker Babe Ruthless, but she'll have to keep the side career secret from her beauty-pageant-obsessed Mom (Marcia Gay Harden) and football-watchin' Dad (Daniel Stern). A coming-of-age tale emerges between bouts of skating on the RD track (Jimmy Fallon plays the goofy Derby announcer), with a dash of romance added in the form of a generic Dude in a Band. Kristen Wiig does surrogate-mom duty as a teammate, Juliette Lewis is appropriately out-there as a track rival, and Andrew Wilson (bro of Owen and Luke) gets some hilariously poker-faced lines in as the team's coach. All the pleasant stuff makes you almost overlook how ramshackle the movie is, and how standard-issue the parental tensions (even if Harden is a total pro, as always). Ellen Page doesn't offer the innate audience-friendly cuddliness of Barrymore herself--thus her apt casting as Juno's brittle heroine--but her rapt focus is something to behold. "Babe Ruthless" indeed. --Robert Horton

Whip It is a 2009 American sports comedy-drama film directed by Drew Barrymore in her directorial debut and written by Shauna Cross, based on her 2007 novel Derby Girl. The film is co-produced by Barrymore and Barry Mendel. It stars Elliot Page as a teenager from the fictional town of Bodeen, Texas, who joins a roller derby team.
‘Whip It’s faithfulness to the material Inspiring it is far from being a matter of coincidence. Founded in 2001, Shauna cross was involved in the early days of the 𝑻𝑿𝑹𝑫 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓 𝑹𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒆, and she skated under the pseudonym of “Maggie Mayhem” for the 𝑳𝒐𝒔 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝑫𝒆𝒓𝒃𝒚 𝑫𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒔 soon after. Cross had no initial interest in documenting her experiences on these teams in a traditional sense, but after much convincing, decided to create a fictional story using the aforementioned novel and the screenplay that she penned herself as her mediums of choice. Cross avoids drooling out details about the rules of roller derby (while including a brief explanation of its objectives) and instead focuses on providing a grounded story that is reflective of the emotions roller derby as an extracurricular activity (and the comradery it produces) are capable of procuring.
Having fallen love with the characters created by Cross, Drew Barrymore's efforts in gathering a cast representative of the complex relationship they have with one another were just as fruitful. Elliott page - who is no stranger to portraying the outskirted misfit - naturally brings a tomboyish charm to Bliss that both matches and clashes with her traditionalist mother and ambivalently supportive father figure; moreover, Cross and Barrymore avoid transformative clichés pinnacle to more typical coming-of-age dramas, and instead highlights Bliss’s internal struggles that are intimately rooted in themes involving self-expression and following your heart (which, is cheesy as hell, but #Iloveit. Sue me.). Even Bliss’s largest rival - played by the versatile Juliette Lewis - can't deny the positive energy so unabashedly prevalent in Cross’s script and lends further to a story that is the perfect pick-me-up when negativity is abound.
Ultimately - ‘Whip It’s simplicity is indicative of its honest and purely intentions. There is a shallowness in its premise in addition to how its conflicts emerge, become intertwined with one another, and are resolved, but dichotomous points of view are juxtaposed without the use of flippant satire or dismissive pretentiousness. Bliss’s desire to disembarrass herself from the polished world of pageantry is paired with her own Mother's desire to live vicariously through her - and this, is a behavior that is validated while being an expectation that is subverted respectfully. As others have said before the romantic subplot adds little sustenance to the overarching story, but it is Incorporated in a way that isn’t distracting, deflective, or takes away from the (more important) subject of empowerment and finding your own way.
‘Whip It’s relentless #girlssupportinggirls vibes make it a bit of a guilty pleasure on my part, but the way in which it integrates a smorgasbord of emotions most prominent during a period of maturity and vulnerability make it a national treasure in my book. Despite occurring in a fictional reality dominated by the pressure to compromise on passions, Cross’s insinuations are influential and have real-world applications worth entertaining: because if the skates fit, you might as well wear them.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022I watched this on Prime when I couldn't find anything else that seemed interesting. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this film about a cultural subject I've never understood. In addition to Ellen Page (when she identified as a woman), this movie includes a cast of interesting characters who all give really good, believable performances. The bottom line is we all have a right to live our own dreams, regardless of how strange they may seem to our family and friends. I'm pretty selective about movies I add to my my film disc collection, but this one made the cut.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2023After an initial bad copy, which Amazon exchanged without issue, I found this film to be quite entertaining. Ellen Page stars as a high school girl who is tired of doing her mother's wishes and decides to pursue something that she loves, Roller Derby.
I'm not exactly a stellar writer, so I'll close this by saying check out a film by Drew Barrymore (really) You'll like it.
Ellen was pretty...

Ob Junge oder Mädl is da egal.
